That's the first time I try my cheap macro equipment on a living insect and I realized some things:

a) it's hard to persuade a cockroach stand still
b) you can restrain a cockroach from moving if you manage to flip it upside-down (as shown in this photo)
c) reverse lens mounting is not practical at all in times like this

This one was shot with a Nikon D700, a reversely mounted Nikkor 35mm @ f/22 and a handmade DYI RingFlash following the patent shown here: [link]

p.s1: no animals were hurt during this photo-shot, apart from the photographer burning his thumb on a hot lamp. The model was set free after this last successful shot.

p.s2: the length of this insect was about 2cm

p.s3: that's the last time I take photo of a cockroach.. I like their structural details but avoid having any physical contact
