Description
Deep underground Okoto, within the ancient and currently unguarded Temple of Masks, Ruunaja could even now feel his destiny calling him forth. This Temple contained the many shrines of Masks far more precious than those of the villagers, and even those far more powerful than even the Toa's Masks. The spirit of Makuta himself had drawn him to this place, promising him great power and respect from all. And now, Ruunaja was practically tasting success from afar. Reaching the deepest part of the temple, Ruunaja was called forth before the most forbidden of confiscated Masks... the Mask of Darkness. With this Mask, Ruunaja would be granted many promising abilities; Manipulating and animating shadows, absorbing light from others, able to see that which others cannot within the darkness, and even becoming a shadow himself. With promising, powerful abilities like these, all would finally grasp his attention, and Ruunaja would finally gain the respect he'd so rightfully deserved...
"That's right, Ruunaja." Whispered the ghostly voice of Makuta. "You are very close now. Close to gaining your rightful power and glory. Evoke the power of darkness itself, and you shall never be hated again."
Making no hesitation from these words, the miner proceeded up the steps, toward the Mask of power atop its shrine. To think that it would be protected by a forcefield after all this time. Clearly, these villagers are far more foolish than him. He then begin reaching forth with both hands. He was so very close now...
"Ruunaja, WAIT!" Though startled, Ruunaja became increasingly annoyed as he'd recognized that voice. Turning around, he could see his treacherous friend Trinity, as well as her father Ekimu the Mask Maker himself, as they quickly charged their way into the area of forbidden Masks.
"So, you ratted me out to Ekimu. I should have known not to trust you... You're too late, Trinity!" bellowed Ruunaja. "Very soon now, I shall taste ultimate power within my grasp."
"Do not be a fool, Ruunaja!" Ekimu spat. "Can you not see, you are toying with powers that you yourself cannot possibly handle?!"
"HAH! Do not trouble yourself with riddles, old man. You've lost your power over me, ever since you'd abandoned us all within darkness. Well, I myself shall now harness darkness itself, commanding it to obey me and me alone! If the Toa cannot stop it, then I might as well take it for myself."
"Ruunaja, please, think about what you're saying!" Trinity pleaded to her friend. "Makuta is blinding you to the truth. Only the Toa can ever bring peace to our doomed land--"
"Do not speak to me of peace, traitor!!" Ruunaja shouted. "If you wanted peace, you should have helped me a long time ago! Where was peace when I needed it? You all allowed the Toa to give it to you freely, while I was laid to starve in my own disgrace! Well no more... With this Mask, I shall become all powerful, even more so than Tahu and his merry band. None shall ever laugh at me again!!!" Tearing his own powerless Mask off and throwing it down in front of Trinity's feet, Ruunaja then turned back and picked up the Mask of Darkness.
"Not even you, old friend." Ruunaja then slowly raised the Mask closer toward his face, as Ekimu and Trinity watched.
"Do not do it, Ruunaja! You still have a chance! Do not throw your life away like my brother had!" Ekimu begged him. But it remained hopeless. Even Trinity's attempts were for nothing.
"Please, Ruunaja, don't do it! STOP!!"
But it was too late... Ruunaja had now placed the all powerful Mask over his face. And, upon contact, it channeled a tremendous surge of energy through his body. He then screamed in seering agony as his body began shifting and changing violently. Every bone creaked and cracked as his body re-configured and grew in size. Even his armour changed to better suit his new design. With the pain finally over, and his new body complete. Ruunaja turned and revealed his new self, with piercing red optics. He even had a new flowing cape to compliment his new form. Green energy surged around him, as he grinned and laughed with triumph.
"NO!!" Ekimu rushed up the steps and attempted to knock the Mask from Ruunaja's face. But, making impeccable timing, Ruunaja had summoned his own shadow and used that to physically punch Ekimu aside, into a wall, with Ruunaja's solid form remaining stationary.
"Oh no, father!" Trinity quickly rushed to Ekimu's side, helping him back up. Ruunaja watched, and chuckled.
"Such power... I've never known anything quite like it... Makuta was right all along. Okoto shall finally taste my wrath!"
"Please, Ruunaja..." Ekimu wheezed. "To handle such raw power is unthinkable... If you continue to control it... In time, it shall control you too... You shall not survive..."
"We shall see about that, Ekimu, when I have your own people begging at my feet." He then looks at Trinity, glaring angrily. "You... You were always everyone's favourite." Summoning his elemental power to the wings on his back, Ruunaja rose from the ground, before flying up and smashing his way through the Temple's ceiling, ready to bring the people of Okoto to their knees.
"No... Okoto is doomed... What have I done?" Ekimu lamented.
Trinity then picked up Ruunaja's old Mask, as it was slightly chipped from the fall. As she looked down at the damaged Mask, her tears then dropped down onto it... Just an old memory now.
"Ruunaja... I'm so sorry."
