Even if you heavily referenced something/ made some sort of mistake, the least people can do is take a rational approach to commenting instead of blindly going "GO DIE TERRIBLE THEIF AAA".

I would say do what you want with your art. To me, art shouldn't be something that has to be fit everyone's likings.
from what I read it was just some people mis-understanding. Go do your heavy references if you want! its your art, only when you start reaping some benefits from it does it go south.
