I suppose the whole line is not much of a dove or pigeon past Mamepato. I still like it though actually :0 But I like birds, so I'm probably biased.
The overworld sprite IS kinda cute though.

It's a pheasant -,- The classic American prairie bird. The final is a ring-necked pheasant. I think it's much more original than just a big pigeon as the final.

Kyle-Dove In reply to fuzzball288 [2011-01-18 18:27:19 +0000 UTC]
It's a dove actually. It's pokedex entry talk about always being able to return to it's trainer (like a homing dove) and that where they live is peace (dove of peace). The hato also means dove.
I know it becomes a pheasant, but that's kenhorou. I think it's original to have a pheasant but I would have liked it separate instead of pigeon > dove > pheasant. Whole thing makes no sense at all.

fuzzball288 In reply to Kyle-Dove [2011-01-19 20:57:22 +0000 UTC]
It's like a pigeon with pheasant-like attributes. Pigeons can look really crazy though. [link]
The only non-pigeon things on it are the skin above the eye (which is more of a game bird thing) and the tail. You only don't like it because of the skin :C
Also I just realized pigeons and pheasants are both commonly domesticated birds, so it makes even more sense to me now.

What the heck? who has a pet pheasant ever? I've never heard of a domesticated pheasant.

They're bred as showbirds, pigeons aren't common pets either. You know the chicken calendar I got you? There's a book too, and one for pigeons, and I think there's one for pheasants. I have the chicken/pigeon ones, but I want the pheasant one. :3

seriously? bred as showbirds? I don't know about that.
In spain loads of people keep pigeons on their roof?

Sorry that's what I meant, it doesn't look like a pigeon, it's on it's way to becoming a pheasant.
But pheasants aren't birds of prey, so it's weird...

I kinda like the direction they went it... it's REALLY different... but I like that they didn't turn it into the beefy big-chested bird that every other early-game bird turned into. I'm not sure I like it, but the virtue of taking a risk, I can at least appreciate it.

Kyle-Dove In reply to lydario [2011-01-18 00:10:46 +0000 UTC]
Yeah in that regard I can sort of appreciate it, but I would have preffered it as a separate pokemon than anything to do with Pidove.
It just really clashes in my mind - a cute little urban pigeon - turning into a pheasant? pigeons to me are annoying and everywhere, but pheasants are shy, reclusive creatures that live in large fields and are hard to see.

Yea, I think it was more a relation based on aesthetics as opposed to personality. They probably could have done a more majestic type of thing, kinda like a feebas/milotic where something stupid turns beautiful and cool.

Goddamnit, everyone of these that you make just prooves more and more that they should have had pokemon follow you in Black and White too.
It was the coolest feature of HG/SS after all, and they';d only have to make another 150 or so new sprites, since they could just port the other 450+ sprites into the game anyway, it really makes me sad seeing all this wasted potential.
π: 0 β©: 1
Kyle-Dove In reply to captaincabbage [2011-01-17 21:53:13 +0000 UTC]
Not even that, as the other 450+ sprites are ALREADY in the game!! Compared to all the pokemon animations, you'd think making 150 or so new sprites wouldn't be so difficult? If I can do it...
I'm really sour about it too, my only hope is that they'll release a third version and bring it back!

You are COMPLETELY right and I think you just read my mind.
Hopefully the continue the trend that they've always done and make a Pokemon Grey, or something. They'd probably even have a Grey version exclusive area like White Forest or Black City. I'd personally love a place called Grey Harbor, which is always foggy and a great place to find rare water types and buy rare items. But maybe I'm putting too much though into this. XD
I didn't even know they'd put the walking sprites in the game as well, that just makes it even more baffling!
The thing is, My girlfriend and I have already committed to buying Black and White, so we're not gonna just welsh out on it.

Kyle-Dove In reply to rosutu [2011-01-17 20:07:11 +0000 UTC]
Yeah but you can just evolve on the idea of a pidgeon or a dove. Stuff like staraptor is just a big starling.
π: 0 β©: 1
rosutu In reply to Kyle-Dove [2011-01-17 20:14:57 +0000 UTC]
Actually, it's a starling-falcon hybrid.
You have to understand that this creature fulfills a niche that's been present since the very first generation: the small, common bird that evolves into a larger, falcon-like bird. Mixing a pigeon with a hawk couldn't be done without it looking silly, so they went with mixing a pigeon with a pheasant.
π: 0 β©: 1
Kyle-Dove In reply to rosutu [2011-01-17 20:33:37 +0000 UTC]
I totally get that (though second + third gen didn't do that) but I don't see how Kenhorou fulfils that. He doesn't look fitting, nothing at all like the big bulky pidgeot and staraptor. I believe they could have made a large, fierce looking pigeon evolution.
π: 0 β©: 1
rosutu In reply to Kyle-Dove [2011-01-17 20:44:39 +0000 UTC]
2nd gen kept Pidgey but might've intended Hoothoot to be this, while 3rd gen tried this with Swellow.
And on the besides, if they followed the pattern of Pigeot and Staraptor to a T, there'd be an even greater cry against it. The creature has to fill the niche, but bring something new to the table, just as Woobat brings something that Zubat never could.
After all, we technically have a pigeon Pokemon: the Pidgey line. Unfezant would have to differentiate itself from that line.
π: 0 β©: 1
Kyle-Dove In reply to rosutu [2011-01-17 20:54:59 +0000 UTC]
You definitely have a point there. I've nothing against the idea of a pheasant pokemon I'm just dissapointed they didn't do more with mamepato/pidove. I don't consider Pidgey a pigeon, it's a total sparrow...The difference between pidgey and a proper city grey pigeon is massive.
π: 0 β©: 1
rosutu In reply to Kyle-Dove [2011-01-17 21:06:54 +0000 UTC]
And yet, it's known as "Pidgey".
Besides, what more can you do with a pigeon, other than make it bigger?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kyle-Dove In reply to rosutu [2011-01-17 21:11:12 +0000 UTC]
What's wrong with making it bigger? Give it some interesting feather arrangements, big talons, pink legs, I think there's quite a few things you could do.
Pidgey is just a name.
