Given the context the Pokemon games provide, I've never really completely bought the whole "dog fighting" comparison. Yeah, there are similarities, but the way the games seem to want us to see it, at least with regard to the wild pokemon, the pokemon are the ones that choose the trainer, not the other way around. Pokemon are intelligent creatures at least comparable to humans if their capacity to understand spoken directions is any indication. The way I came to understand it, when wild pokemon "appear" before a trainer, what's actually happening is that the pokemon is challenging the trainer to catch it and will only yield to one it deems worthy to train it.
I've always wondered why the games never let you catch a fainted pokemon. If my hypothesis is true, then the reason is because if the pokemon is out cold, it can't even give subconscious consent (such as dreaming when asleep). Thus, catching it then would become unethical.
This page actually reaches very similar conclusions to my own. I'm really happy to know someone else looks at Pokemon this way.

There's a lot to unpack here. Going beyond the surface level of Danny's monologue, we see the principle demonstrated in action. Brain gets a ringside seat to Raijalchu showing off how a worthy Trainer commands his Pokémon, being in-sync with Kraker exactly as Danny describes; contrast with the literally napping Varden, who has left Tarrant to fend for himself. "And the battlefield becomes a lonely, loveless place" indeed; it explains a lot about why Tarrant is the way he is. More than likely, Varden will place the blame on Tarrant for losing, but with Vivian present he will hopefully be prevented from doing anything... regrettable.
One can only hope that Brian is paying attention. Varden still has two more Pokémon after Tarrant, and—assuming that he doesn't forfeit the match on account of sleeping on the job—perhaps Brian will have an opportunity to apply what he has learned from Raijalchu and Kraker. Beyond being simple tests of skill, Pokémon Gyms are supposed to be tests of character; a test which the current Gym Leader is himself failing.
Up until now, Brian has relied on Cole's strength and cunning as a crutch for his own lack of brawn or brains, but—like his mother—his true strength lies in his heart. I'm thinking that if he can connect with Bud or Dante in the same way that Raijal is in sync with Kraker, then perhaps he can prove himself a worthy Trainer after all. Certainly, Bud seems to share Brian's slightly worried expression, and for Brian's starter Pokémon Bud has seen surprisingly little use.
Also, I can't be the only one who noticed that Danny referred to Aodan in the third person (despite ostensibly being the same Pokémon). Getting Emotion/Reason dichotomy vibes here.
