Actually Zagr was meant to happen and even Vazquez admits he'd pair Zim and Gaz together.
Zagr would be canon due to the unaired series finale "Invader Dib"

Well I do say Invader Zim was a pretty dark comedy for nick standards, but boy was it a treat. Not everything post 2000 is complete crud when you look back as an adult.

Yeah it was, I don't usually like dark shows (I generally like more light-hearted shows), but Invader Zim was an exception for me. Thank you for the comment and fav. ^^

...Not that stupid robot again...
((You did such a wonderful job on this^^ Zim and Gaz were rumored to have a relationship in the ending episode "Invader Dib" but I'm not exactly sure))

Thank you! Yeah, I've heard about the episode "Invader Dib" but I think it was just a team up between Zim and Gaz.

I know neither pairings were going to happen in the show and obviously never will.
Actually, there is some discrepancy about that.
1. Jhonen Vasquez himself said at InvaderCon II that ZAGR would happen if romance were a focal point of the show.
2. As confirmed by head writer Eric Trueheart, the series' finale Invader Dib basically implies ZAGR and possibly DATR also, as the episode would feature ZIM, Skoodge, Tenn (recruited after a rescue), Zita, and Larb verses Dib, Tak (who would've returned as the core villain of Day of the Spookies, but would remain resentful towards her own kind for leaving her stranded, plus retaining her distasteful loathing of ZIM), and the combined Resisty and Meekrob forces, ending with Dib, Tak, and the remainder of their armies being banished to Saturn, whilst, per the series' wiki, "Gaz would have secretly sided with Zim against Dib's forces and would join him in ruling Irk later on" (it is unfortunate that the series' cancellation left many un-aired episodes, including the finale, unfinished, but the forthcoming comic book could easily remedy that, since Jhonen and Eric are writing it).
3. Richard Horvitz and Melissa Fahn ship "themselves" (that is, they ship ZAGR). For example, at InvaderCon 3, when asked about what they would want for an Invader ZIM theme park and Rikki Simmons answers as GIR by saying he wants a pregnancy starter test kit, Melissa cheekily turns to the audience, saying, "You can have one be Gaz and the other be ZIM", earning a murmur from the audience and a bemused expression from Richard.
4. The DVD commentaries for the series have suggested that "Gaz is ZIM's potential love interest" and Melissa herself said "Gaz can love, she's just better than everyone else" (a fact that even Jhonen agrees with, affirming that Gaz is the sanest and smartest character on the show) on the commentaries for The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever. Plus, ZIM being a defect allows him to feel emotions, even if what he says has to be taken with a grain of salt ("I love you, cold and unfeeling robot arm" [as a smeet] and "If I could love, I think I might love you" [as his regular self, directed towards Mini Moose]).
Note: The following is a brief telling of the backstories of Dib, ZIM, and Gaz...
Although Dib would be discovered to be a failed clone of the Professor and ZIM was a test tube smeet, Gaz's origins remain shrouded in mystery. Even so, they were all machine-created in some way. It is even suggested that the test subject used to create Gaz (the remnants of which are in a jar in Professor Membrane's lab with the label "Mom" written on it) wasn't human, which might provide somewhat of an answer for Gaz's strange powers (a control over fire, to be able to manifest inclement weather, shadowy concealment plus the power to appear from anywhere at any time with a single thought, and to create sentient robotic stuffed animals "programmed to feat on human flesh" [Gaz's FNaF-like ability is probably derivative of the fact that her favorite restaurant, Bloaty's Pizza Hog, is - like other parodies, including FNaF - a lampooning of the real-life ShowBiz Pizza Place & Chuck E. Cheese arcade pizzerias]) and give a reason for Dib's obsession with the paranormal.
5. Despite Gaz being canonically 9-11 years old, ZIM being umpteen years old due to Irkens aging more rapidly than humans but humans growing up faster than Irkens, and both of them having very limited interaction thanks to the show's premature cancellation, ZIM and Gaz do share common ground, for per the wiki, they share "their mutual hatred of Dib, and their mutual desire to cause him great pain in various forms (though they have never succeeded in killing him to date), they even have a loathing for Earth itself, have a penchant for being melodramatic with a love for destruction, can also be very determined in getting whatever it is they want, can be rather stubborn, share a surprisingly high tolerance for GIR and his hyperactivity", a use of piggies (for instance, Bad Bad Rubber Piggy speaks for itself) and a fondness for video games, per the pilot (which shows ZIM playing a game in his basement lab), NanoZIM (which has Gaz confusing one of ZIM's world-conquering devices for a handheld video game and "defeating" ZIM with it), the fact that the Vampire Piggy Hunter of Gaz's favorite gaming franchise resembles a Tallest version of ZIM (a plush of which is seen at the head of her bed in Gaz: Taster of Pork), and that Gaz can easily control Irken technology (leading to suspicion that Irken tech is basically like video games, hence why Gaz is so adept at using it, despite being a different species).
6. ZIM (with GIR sometimes) and Gaz are the only playable characters from the series for use in Nickelodeon crossover video games (Nickelodeon MLB, for example).
Need I go on?

Wow, that's a lot of text. It's good to hear that my ships weren't as unlikely to happen as I thought, thanks for sharing. ^^

No problem. Always glad to help. Here's to hoping the comic continues where the show left off and allows for Invader Dib to happen officially.

Yeah, I love the possibilities for their friendship, but romance just doesn't work for them to me. Thanks for the comment.
