I don't normally upload Daily Cardinal stuff but I couldn't resist with this one. This is one possible graphic I sent to the Daily Cardinal Alumn for this year's 120th anniversary invitations. The Daily Cardinal is the fifth oldest student-run newspaper in the nation, and one of two independent papers on the UW-Madison campus (which is absurd because campuses normally have one, if any at all.) Back in the 90's the Cardinal's competitor, The Badger Herald (founded as a conservative voice during the Vietnam war protests on campus) and the Cardinal had a small tussle and jostle of their EICs and board members. I can't remember exactly what happened, but in the end it basically put the Cardinal down the toilet with debt. Thankfully it only lasted a for seven months. When it finally started back up, the image on the front cover was a graphic of a cardinal rising out of the ashes like a Phoenix. This is my homage to the Cardinal's 1995 return.Painted in Photoshop CS5, approximately 3 hours.

Thanks! I was trying to go more for 'explosion' than 'fire' but it just wouldn't turn out, so it is what it is, haha.

Ah, just spectacular! I really love the texture in around the neck, and the way the brush strokes define the feathers. Lovely work as always.

Aw, thank you very much! I am actually really proud of the seemingly feathered textures on the neck and head. ...The wings are another story, hahahaha.
