Description 100 themes - 093 "Drowning"

Another piece for a local show. I wanted to do something different, I never do stuff like this.

Not really sure what category to put this into, I guess "surreal" is the closest I can get. o_O

wow i really like this!! I love how the creatures don't mirror each other exactly but still tie the picture together and definitely do give a surreal feel. I also love the colors and the way the blood (?) looks... so beautiful. You really do get a sense of struggle and dismay from this as well. Gorgeous work!!

This is just beautiful. I agree with everything Pallanoph said, regarding the use of space, the line weights, the pared-down colour palette, the deep emotion. I heartily commend you on a highly economical and expressive use of brushwork and colour.

And wow I got amazed <3 how long did this take?
It looks like a sad part out of a nightmare: "blurry" background witch dosn't have a feeling of being water and yet the two creatures are drowning as if it was. Great masterpiece

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LancerMoo In reply to OS9 [2009-08-10 23:24:56 +0000 UTC]

It took... not too long, maybe 6-7 hours? (The actual painting/ink was probably only 3-4, I obsessed over the sketch)

Actually, when I was finished I noticed that it was quite similar to a nightmare I used to have as a kid... it was totally unintentional, though. XD
Thank you!

Akooda [2009-07-31 17:51:18 +0000 UTC]

Love how fluid the poses look despite how awkward they actually are (if you think about them).

And the FADING on the red into the bg color. All I can really say is, "omg."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LancerMoo In reply to Akooda [2009-08-04 19:14:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah.,the poses are definitely awkward. Especially that poor guy on the bottom, he must have a reeeally flexible spine to be able to pose like that... o_O

The red was my favorite part to do, it blended very nicely with the background color...

pallanoph [2009-07-31 14:57:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh, how I really want to say something profound about this one, hopefully a little more than my normal spazz comments...

Color palette: What I particularly like is the shades of yellow ochre-ish color that bleeds into that gorgeous red oxide hue.

I LOVE how there are the more solid elements that are the reddish swirly masses (I feel as though I could walk through them, really) contrasting with that delicate linework that is the figures. They seem as though they might almost dissolve at any minute in their fragility, and yet they stay together with that masterful use of line. They are transparent, and yet they are still definite. And that brushwork is BEAUTIFUL!!! More points for including subtle shifts in the black, and for the huge variety in line weight. I'm inspired.

So yes... I LOVE this.

LancerMoo In reply to pallanoph [2009-08-04 19:29:07 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you! o_o

The yellow color is actually the liquitex "parchment" color straight out of the tube, haha. It's a wonderful color, it blended so easily with the various reds and gave a very nice result.

I'm very happy to hear that their fragility comes across well. I've felt lately that a lot of my stuff lacks emotional depth - besides the "happy and cheerful" kind - so I really wanted to push myself to try something different this time.

pallanoph In reply to LancerMoo [2009-08-06 14:57:16 +0000 UTC]

Oooooh, parchment! It's quite the gorgeous color.

I find a lot of times my art lacks any sort of heart, aside from exhibiting my OCD.

But I think this really shows a deeper meaning, and even without the title I might have arrived at that conclusion. It's beautiful!
