Description Yay, another art completed so soon? I'm cheating, I started this a couple of weeks ago. But alas, digital art takes forever for me. Probably because it's far less intuitive then pencils.

But yeah so, what's with all the shine. Well, in case you didn't know, that's what my imagination is like: shine and color, glitter all over the place, if possible, motley XD Hahah, no. But sometimes yes. But in fact, where Winter is regarded, it is very much deserved. In fact, this was inspired by a real experience. It was the first day of winter, right after the Winter Solstice. As you know, I celebrate the Winter Solstice as a major holiday (could be said THE major one) and this time it was accompanied by a really important event in my life. Those days were really spiritual. And as though to celebrate that, for the first time in I-don't-know-how-many years, it snowed on the Solstice. The next day I went out and walked out in the fields close to where I live. It was cold, but sunny, there had been fog the night before, and everything was white and shimmering with frost. It was a winter wonderland the kind of which I rarely see nowadays here. It was a really beautiful and special day. Beautiful views and feelings that I will remember. You know, when you are thinking that you want to draw / paint something - you know it is very beautiful.

Later I found this picture of a snowy owl, a bird I really find very beautiful, and I decided I wanted to draw him. While pondering on the background, I realized what I saw back then on the first winter day would be a very nice background, albeit not a very realistic one. And although I cannot really draw what I saw and remember, my abilities won't quite permit it, the scenery behind the owl is inspired by that view. And it isn't a bad representation of the beauty of that day, I think.

Now.... the intention of what to draw as a background was clear and I thought it would be fairly simple. It's all white, right? WRONG. In fact, it's anything but XD Besides, drawing a scenery that is "all-white", brightly lit and shimmering and still make things stand out and be distinguishable from each other is not so easily achieved. At least to someone like me who is really not into backgrounds and sceneries. So there were several failed attempts and a lot of rummaging through pictures and paintings of frosty winter scenery before I could get even close to something promising. But since I wasn't sure how to paint what i envisioned, even the references were not a complete solution. So the rest was a lot of experimenting and playing around with colors and light. I also decided I am tired of the uniformity of hues and values in my paintings (that results from me using a very limited number of colors), and I started fooling around with the different blending modes of the brushes (which I didn't know existed until recently). Eventually I decided I wanted to paint somethingΒ in this new fashion and try to keep to that technique rather than refine the painting to something overly sterile and stiff. Seen as I usually have the urge to hide all the drawing traces and brush-strokes and that didn't produce very nice results, I also decided I want to see if I can do otherwise and be a bit.... bolder. So that's why there's so much messy lines, so much strange illogical colors and why I didn't finish and refine and polish each and every inch of it but left some places messy in an "artsy" (read lazy) way. It's against me to leave this like that, but I decided, "screw yourself Lapis, you need a new touch in art".
So! This mess of chaotic colors and hues is really my experimental canvas - sorta the artistic equivalent of the mad scientist's lab. HOWEVER. I did learn some things. I did practice using the blending options of brushes to create unexpected and less "control-freakish" strokes, shades, effects. I did leave stuff a bit messy and brush-strokey, even if that makes me a little uneasy still. I also find that this messy brush-strokey method is actually good for this one particular kind of cirrus clouds, lol XD That was a flick of the moment. All in all, here's a shiny, glittery, frosty experiment. Enjoy, lol XD

Nah, I mean, I'm not entirely satisfied. Particularly with the composition - value and scenery-wise. But that's not so important. I did learn some stuff here and that makes me happy.
Ah yeah, and the owl is good, but then this is something I canΒ paint, especially with a reference. I could have added a lot more detail, but that would have made it untrue to the spirit of this painting XD

Actually you nailed the colors of snow spot-on in my opinion.Β  I live in the stuff for 6 months out of the year on average, and I still struggle with painting it.Β  So much blue in every shadow, and every ice crystal is a prism.
Not to mention the owl is stunning.

Hahah, given how random was my painting process here, I'm surprised I did XD But thank you so much dear, this means a lot.

On a side note, ohhhhhhhhh, you live in snow 6 months of the year.... I am very very jealous....

Don't be jealous.Β  It's beautiful, to be sure, but it gets real tiresome every night, slogging half a klick out to the nearest plowed road 'cause you can't drive up your street even in 4 wheel drive low with the differential locked.
(The county whines that they can't afford more plows and cutters.., but they can afford roundabouts that clog up traffic on the main highway

Me too. I complain while I’m shoveling it (my snow-thrower broke down), but the drought years are so bad. This has been an unusually blizzard-y Winter so far. Once this latest set of storms break I’ll have to snowshoe up to Rose Knob and take some photos. It’s impressively deep.

Mmmm yeah.... as the climate is swaying out of balance, extremes will grow ever more frequent, and this counts for all extremes, not just hot and dry. I hate it people take such incidents as "proof" against global warming. Shows only how incredibly short-sighted this "sentient" species is.

This is absolutely gorgeous. It's all so bright and fresh, and it's a really minor thing but the clouds kind of echo the shape of the owl's wings? Not sure if that was intentional but feels like it ties things together

Oh no, that's completely random, I never even would have noticed it if you hadn't mentioned XD Those clouds were just random strokes to fill up the composition. Thank you!

how you draw so fastttt XD of i read the description but still! XDΒ

I really like seeing digital art from you as well! i can clearly see that you study a lot and always learning a lot too! Β

this drawing is really impressive! and I'm actually a big appreciator of more abstract painted details like this, done with more loose brushes!Β

I find more light and brother drawings like this very challenging! and even so you managed to capture and separate each part, the owl and environment really well- as you can see both of them, the lightings, details all very well and not confusing and yet the owl blends really well with the environment too- as they do! Β

love the colors and details friend! very well done once again!

Also this picture brings me such peace and joy to look at too! Β

lapis-lazuri In reply to Svartya [2019-02-14 21:45:52 +0000 UTC]

Come here, I'll tell you the secret.... *draws in, in a plotting manner and whispers:* It's because I'm too lazy to devote more time to drawings 83

Ah, thank you! Digital art is by far less cozy and comfortable to me than pencil, but I want to learn better.... Although I wouldn't say I really study, more like.... actually the mad scientist metaphor was quite on point for what I do, lol XD
And thanks! Those "abstract" as you call them details, they make me uneasy. Always feels like I'm being sloppy, like I leave it unfinished and people can see I actually painted this which makes me feel nearly ashamed, which is silly because I obviously did? Wtf, Lapis logic >.<

Indeed, I found out in darkness epic effects are much easier to create and make realistic, and with a lot less effort. Daylight demands everything to be painted in insane detail and masterfully if you are to make a scene appear remotely realistic. Hell, a lot of the mastery in art is how to make things look realistic or well without being painted realistically.... or well, lol o.O

But anyway, thank you so much! I'm glad my little idea of how to "separate" the owl (because he really blends very much with the snow) actually worked. I wasn't sure it was a good idea, ha!

*whispers loudly XD* EVEN SOOO I LOVE THEMΒ

ahahaha yeh but you know i love quickly done details like this actually XD what i find impressive from seeing some drawings that looks realistic are not always the details but yet the shadings and light sources I've seen very simple painted drawings but they look very realistic because of this! but indeed its so tricky to get shadings right and all Β

man i should def practice on more light and bright pictures because they make me feel very intimidate XD in darker ones i can even hide and make more abstract details and stuff but yeh as you said bright one demands so much more O.oΒ

yes it was! i can perfectly see them too!Β

To me you are surely going right on improving more on digital arts friend! Β

DAWWW

Ah yeah, I agree about that, lighting is a huge thing. And I'm still at the stage, "much to learn I still have" huhuhuuu But I try.

On the other hand, I'd say only go for it if you actually enjoy doing it. Otherwise it kinda defeats the purpose. That is, unless you aspire to be a professional artist (which I definitely don't), but that's different.

Aww, thank you once more It is difficult sometimes, sometimes even frustrating, but it's well worth it in the end of the day :3
