Description Time for some real art, I figured. This piece actually came to me not long ago, after I saw something beautiful painted by one of my best friends.... more about that a bit later, but it hit me with that instant inspiration that makes me go like, drawdrawdraw, NOW! Though of course I was up to some other stuff and it still had to wait.... at least a few days more. Then I figured, March would be a good moment to do this portrait, because it is the time things start coming in bloom and because it is generally considered a "feminine" month (though that's kinda nonsense); I even considered completing this portrait for March 8 (even if I actually disapprove of that date), but the point being, I don't feel a need to shy away from the feminine theme anymore, as I did before. Perhaps, finally, I am starting to overcome things....

Naturally, none of that really has anything to do with her, although I do find her to be quite representitive of femininity, in a very delicate, beautiful and elegant way. But also with strength. Strength as it seems, has different dimensions and layers.

So dear friends, entering the siderian realms once again. Meet Rose Sætansen, Stian's granddaughter, who has been smoothly moving in and out of the spotlight for some time now. What I mean is, there has been some glorious artworks of her done in the past (not by me until now), but I don't think much has been told about her and her story - aside from the fact she loved her grandpaw beyond measure yet lost him when she was still very young.... and yet she remained connected to his spirit for the rest of her life. It isn't my job to tell her story really. Suffice to say, I learned she was a healer and that let me understand a bit better. Though she feels so innocent and tender to me, on a different level there is a fighter in her and a strength that is not found in just anyone. Strength, as I said, has different forms, and now I've come to understand hers a bit better maybe. She may be much too different, yet something I can relate to is to feel deeply for those you care about.... and life. Who can understand the pain of harm better than a healer really.
So yeah.... hers is the tender face of the strength within. Just like a flower, who may seem tender, innocent and all but helpless, but flowers have a lot of strength within regardless. They have the undying will to sprout and grow, to bloom even in darkness, to transform deserts into colorful wonderlands, to come to life in the harshness of the frost, to last even in the direst circumstances and sometimes even come back to life after death itself has claimed them. That's the essense of Life and what I associate Rose with in a way, who knows.... perhaps there is something very much alike indeed between them.

A bit about the drawing.... Like I said, it got provoked by something beautiful I saw - one of the more recent drawings of Jayme. Not sure if I had the idea to draw Rose before, but this certainly gave me inspiration to do so. Then I had to figure out in what composition and setting, and went for my little trick that is so useful in such situations.... I tend to google photos in search of not the features of the face or colors (because I already have that set), but of the feeling and spirit of the person I am going to draw. I found a lioness who had that strong yet tender, really motherly look in her face, and that gave me the inspiration. I took the pose and a bit of the facial expression from her. The rest was up to me and my imagination.
I gotta say drawing Rose in her colors and in this light was mildly said challenging (my own doing of course, life cannot be far too simple, so challenge gladly accepted). I figured I wanted to go for a pink/violet color scheme because it just feels so much like her, but I also wanted really strong and warm sunlight on one side and that.... complicated things a bit. I spend a long time studying Jayme's drawing, other drawings of Rose, pictures of reddening sunset light on lioness fur and finally actually studying the way sunlight behaves between the petals of a creme-colored rose. That last part really, REALLY helped, I learned a lot about how I should draw the light and colors precisely from there and if I managed to use so rich and variable hues and dare to say it worked quite well, it is thanks to the sunlit roses. Quite fitting, isn't it. I must say I am very happy - and proud - with the result. It's much like how I pictured her (or perhaps even better), the light is warm, the hues are tender, rich and so varied and yet natural, and so very very beautiful, it just all befits her. I hope that comes to be one of those portraits in which I capture a spirit in the colors and light, in a face and eyes. It did take a long time (working with so many colors DOES take time, there was a lot of drawing faint shades, then more on top of them, then adding more and more and more until I get the final hues and depth of shade), and there were times I was in a lot of doubt, but in the end, my faith in my own artistic instincts and feeling has paid off I think. I hope you like the portrait as much as I do.

Ah finally, a thought that came to me towards the very end, while drawing the background. The Sun, as I've pointed out so many times already, is symbolic for willpower. It occurred to me that this is a very fitting symbol to shine behind her and reflect so strongly in her eyes. Perhaps also in combination with the colorful evening sky.... Yes, this is definitely a sunset. Well, you can interpret that further on your own I guess....

References: mostly from Jayme.
2B and 8B pencils, but mainly polychromos color pencils.
20 x 30 cm paper. About 7 hours altogether, roughly.

Finally, I should add some credits.
Warden of the Sætansen family and the siderians as a whole, who holds all the rights:
Rose was first found by Sibera, whom she shares a close connection to.

Naturally, this is another surprise attack from me, hehe.
But this time it goes to both of you, my friends. I hope you like this, it's for you.

Indeed, she is. Yet she is such a tender and caring soul it just doesn't befit her to call her that. Besides, I don't think she'd like it.

She gets her paws dirty.... but not like you think. She's a healer. Yet she has had a very difficult life, full of sorrow and the loss of too many loved ones for a single soul to bear, and yet her spirit stands strong. This is what the title means, this is her spirit. She deserves respect.

She's beautiful, you really captured her gentle soul in this drawing, as well as her Sætansen lineage.
