Good work! What did you use to create the black background?

Great, maybe I can help you! I don't know if you've seen my gallery, but if you look at my pencil work, you'll see that I'm able to go very black without it looking forced. I just make my background in several layers. I start off with 4B usually, and press 50%. I try to draw as evenly as possible because every flaw will show. When i've finished this layer I grab a tissue and blend the whole layer. Next I take my 4B for another layer and press about 80%, this will create a new darker layer. When this is finished, again blend the graphite until it's as even as you can get it. Then you repeat these processes with 6B and finally 8B. You see, you have to get a 6 and 8B pencil to really get dark, they're crucial. Anyway, this method requires quite a bit of patience, but if you do it right the result is totally worth the effort.Β
On a side note: don't use charcoal and graphite together, because charcoal is very matte, whereas graphite shines, together that looks weird. If you make a charcoal background in a graphite drawing, the graphite will appear really flat and pale, because it can't keep up with the contrast charcoal has.
Sorry for my novel there, but I try my best to help.
