Description 5 Hours, Photoshop.

I didn't use any direct reference for this, because I couldn't find any photos of a kingfisher diving, but I referenced this [link] when thinking about how to paint the water.

Awesome!
It kind of looks a bit like a hummingbird, though...

This is AMAZING for something drawn without looking at the real thing! For a moment, I wondered if it was actually a drawing! This looks really good.

I love kingfishers, though our American ones are so drab compared to the Eurasian ones. Great painting, though, it seems very alive and realistic.

Don't know how I missed this one in my watch... Probably because I have to 'X' half of them anyway, I watch close to 400 people these days.

I really like the action in the piece, and the water is excellent. I also referenced the same deviation for one of my pieces. And if you take a look my piece bears too close a resemblance if you ask me, and I feel like a douche now. Great work tho!

Well the idea of seeing above and below the water is quite common. Viag did it for one of his as well. Doesn't really matter that we're copying - copying the art gods is a good way to improve Thanks

I never seen a King fisher before its a wonderful picture of it. I read a book called "The Royal Diaries, Lady of Chi`iao Kuo Warrior of the south" Kingfisher is actually the bird they mention alot.

Theres many different types, if your book is set in the far east then it would probably look different to this one.

ah really? its actually from South China maybe it would look different. but none the less your piece is beautiful and exquisite

Kingfishers have been some of my favorite birds, about four years or so. They are all over the place on the water, very fun to watch dive for food stuffs. Have you ever watched one?

Thanks. I have seen them before, but not that often because there aren't many rivers around where I live.

larkin2 In reply to LarsSamsoe [2007-04-27 09:55:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, not really sure about the size - I don't live by a river so I rarely see them, but the birtish ones have an average wingspan of 25cm - so theyre not very big.

Yeah, I really like this! If your looking for advise, id say the wings are a wee bit stubby and need to be bent if its going to give the impression of taking off!

larkin2 In reply to Jarcy [2007-04-25 21:59:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. You're probably right about the wings, I knew there was something awkward about them. Perhaps I should have spent longer on the sketch.
