Description Here he is!! I managed to complete Halsemon just in time for anime north 2013!

As i usually like to do, i used a new material to help create this costume: Pink insulation foam boards. I used them for the head as i wanted it to be sturdy and upholstery foam wasn't going to fit the bill this time It was an interesting learning experience and i think it turned out rather well! I'm VERY proud of this as this is only my second quadsuit. I really need to pick a quadsuit with a "normal sized" head next time as this is my second massive headpiece XD I'm going to kill my neck with projects like this!

This is one of many photos i'm hoping to upload so keep an eye out for more!

Won Best body shape and fur suit construction in the masquerade!! I'm officially an international artisan!

I totally forgot to comment on this but I have to say I just love this quad! Definitely was one of my favorite digimon in the second series so it brings my nostalgia back haha
So how was working with that pink insulation foam? I've never used it before but I was thinking about using it for my next quadsuit head

It was definitely a learning experience to work with the pink insulation foam! It wasn't too back to work with but it's not as forgiving as upholstery foam or spray insulation foam! I worked carefully so i wouldn't have to redo the piece but i still had some mistakes. It's definitely the worst for clean up though! But in the end i'd say it was worth it since it was probably the lightest way for me to make such a giant headpiece. I would probably use it again depending on the project

Oh is it kinda crumbly and stiff like Styrofoam or something?
Oh neat! I've seen a couple people make quadsuit heads with that stuff before so I figured there were some benefits over upholstery foam. Are there toxins or anything you have to worry about with that insulation foam though?

well when making general carving the big pieces are easy to clean. It's the dust that is a pain to clean! After sanding it down that stuff gets everywhere! I still find some of it in the basement (worst place to work in :S but i couldn't work in a garage or outdoors )

I bought a good face mask for when sanding it because i have read online that it is bad to breath in. I went all out to be safe. I made sure to have a shop vacuum running while i sandedΒ  so it'd pick up most of the mess. I also wear a bag over my hair, goggles for my eyes, and like i said before a gas mask so i wouldn't breath it in. To be ultra safe, i wore crappy clothes i didn't care about and stripped that off whenever i was done to throw in the wash as soon as i was done (my laundry is in the basement XD).

Sorry late night babbles! Hopefully that was helpful!

Yes very much so! Did you happen to have wips of this head? Seeing how you carved it would be pretty helpful

Lasiral In reply to Neonr0se [2013-09-09 04:33:14 +0000 UTC]

unfortunately no. I think i have one picture of before i carved and then maybe one after but that'd be it. I was in a hurry to finish so i stopped taking pictures along the way I mainly used an exacto knife to chunk out a basic shape, then went back and made it a little smoother. Once i had it more or less in shape (slightly bigger then the finished product! because ->) i went on to sanding it smooth. Once that was done i tried to seal it for painting.

this is where i kinda failed and added weight. I didn't have the time or patience for many layers of gesso so i tried to find quicker methods. In the end, it took probably way more time and added more weight :/ I did the main head piece with plaster stripes and screwed myself over with it because that added a ton of weight and added a terrible texture! In the end, i ended up adding like 5 layers of gesso to try and fix that! For the wings, i thought i'd do the classic paper mache then gesso, but again that left a terrible texture! You don't see it in the photos but it's easily noted up close.

So learn from my mistakes and just take the time to gesso!! lol

Ohh so you just glued multiple layers of the foam together to make it thick enough?
And I didn't realize it had to have gesso on it!

Thank you for answering all my questions!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lasiral In reply to Neonr0se [2013-09-11 02:01:50 +0000 UTC]

yea i bought the 2 inch foam boards and bluged like 4 layers of them to get the thickness i needed. And i might have not needed the gesso but i wanted to make sure this head piece lasts!! If i use the foam boards again i'll research and see how much i really need to seal it!

Awesome! Thank you so much for all the information! I really appreciate it
In fact I'm gonna start working on a garudamon cosplay asap haha

Oh and one more question, where did you get the fur from/what kind is it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lasiral In reply to Neonr0se [2013-09-18 20:32:16 +0000 UTC]

I was considering doignaΒ  garudamon or a silphymon with the extra fur i had left over XD

I can't wait to see your finished product!

I bought the fur at a store in toronto. It's about 2-3 inches long i think. Sorry i can't be much more informative then that XD

Just... WOW! That is amazing! I've never seen a Halsemon before but you really nailed it! The construction is spot on, especially in the armor and face. It looks so incredible! Amazing job!

Shipping/Traveling with the giant head armor must be a real pain though But so worth the trouble just for how cool it looks!

Thanks! I really wanted to do something that no one else has cosplayed before and he seemed like a great choice! I'm glad i did him justice!

Traveling isn't too bad. 2 large bins for his body/stilts/head and the wings and "ear/wing" things on top are removable Makes it MUCH easier to transport

You probably could beat me to it i have few other ones lined up before him. I just finished doing my first 2 quads (fluttershy then haselmon being my second ever) so i'm going back to standing up for a couple costumes XD Then do a few more quads maybe before i even touch raidramon!

Haha I used pink insulation foam for Toothless to it is definitely interesting to work with but its very versatile and works out quite nicely. I loved seeing haslemon he turned out so good. =]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lasiral In reply to Tsukune [2013-05-28 20:47:25 +0000 UTC]

I'd need more practice with it to get better with it. I just get so nervous that it's technically flammable (right?) and you need to seal it properly or it'll melt so i caked on probably more then i needed to protect the foam XD

Thanks i'm glad he turned out! You're toothless head is so gorgeous i can't wait to see him redone!
