Description
This is my final piece i did for my Art GCSE exam on the topic of conflict. I chose to do child abuse.There's a lot of symbolic meaning in the piece. I drew the young girl in a cell to show how she is a victim trapped in her life of abuse. She has a black eye and looks like she is wasting away showing her destruction. the hanging teddy bear is a represetation of her childhood which has been damaged and taken from her. The dying flower in her hand is her lifeline and the receding candle represents hope. The eyes displayed behind the prisoner bars is the threat, in this case the threat being the abuser which haunts her life. The scissors which is part of the wire meshing and also where the bear is hanging from shows that if helped she will be released from her prison and be able to regain her childhood and life before its too late.
Done in black pen. References used for the wire fencing and scissors.

Love this. I was abused by my third grade teacher. I felt so trapped during that school year. It wasn't physical or sexual abuse but it still haunts be as an adult.

i myself victim of childabuse... this means a lot. really touched me. im actually cryin right now. its kinda strange. when i read the part where u were talkin abou the scissors and her bein able to regain her childhood before it was too late the music i was listenin to (Angels Fall First) reached its climax... it amazin. thanks 4 puttin the candle there, it would have been 2 sad. did u come up with that scissors thing coming out of the wire mesh urself? that was amazin! u give me a lil more hope, maybe those scissors might cut my noose 2, before its 2 late... neways... u have my utter respect... i know its a lil weird... but at this one point i couldnt help it an i kissed the computer screen, on the girls face cuz she looked so sad...

Thanks, its nice that you appreciate my piece, though i'm sorry to hear its for personal reasons! i've never experienced child abuse but i wanted to try and represent it through an illustration as i find it extremely saddening.
The scissors coming out of the mesh was something that just developed as i was working on the piece, but it fit in well with the rest of the drawing. I hope you get through what you've experienced and you have lots of support! Take care

This is f*cking cool! I love dark art especially involving kids. And the way you've loaded it with symbols and meaning is what makes it outstanding.
There's a really good play of space and depth here and you've balanced the darks and lights of the image really well. The one thing I wish wasn't visible is the slight texture (from coloring) it the large areas of of black. Too late now obviously, but you could avoid those in future by using an ink wash. But perhaps you weren't allowed to use ink washes for this assignment.
Either way, this rocks... it's a favorite.

This was my exam piece a few years back so i could only use what we had there which was black pens and a black felt for the larger black areas. I don't like the texture the felt left either, but oh well. And thanks for the fav!

Good job adressing an important issue. Good use of black and white and your use of symbolism is interesting. You did a good job on the drawing, especially the fence and the scissors stands out and gives the image something extra.
