Description
Character/costume design of Tokyopop's Princess Ai for my editor. Princess Ai character copyright Tokyopop; art and costume design is all my creation.Inked with microns, grayscale shading added in Photoshop. 11"x17" original art is available for sale.

oh, you know me, I'm always a bit against the curve. I somewhat like the older costume designs a bit more.

It's cute, but personally, I liked the other one more. Probably because it had more black in it. *shrugs* Doesn't change the fact that it's great art!

Well, technically, the parts shaded in dark gray are meant to indicate areas of full black, had I used this design in a comic. Not that I expect you to read my mind or anything. ^_-

For your greyscale shading, do you use preset tones that you made yourself or did you get them someplace?

I use a mixture of tones I made myself, and actual pages of screentones that I scanned. Jared and I talk about the process in detail in the Mangaka America book. Check it out.

Is this for some fanart that you guys have to do for the books that come out? I know Solipherus (who does Sea Princess Azuri) said that you guys have bene doing fanart for Return to Labryrinth and The Dark Crystal manga.

The art was related to the upcoming Princess Ai anthology, but I won't have any actual work in the book. I was approached to do a short comic for it, but I decided not to pursue it. Working on a comic pitch for new series instead.
