holy crap you're right.
one of my favorite songs is actually from a crappy movie about killer worms (but like, the movie made me almost throw up so maybe it's not so terrible)

I don't know, Quentin Blake's art is iconic but some may view it as childish (but that in turn is what makes it so successful)

He was a charity case, Sandwell was so appalled by his dishevelled state of mismatched clothing (or possibly a potato sack) that he took it upon himself to clothe the poor soul *noble stance while William tosses a sprinkling of confetti*

lol would Yianis allow himself to look disheveled, or wear a potato sack, or is it just out of his ignorance for human clothes?

Mostly out of necessity. He could only find that! Unless as a beast he had collected really out of date clothes (from passing merchants ir nobles he frightened into undressing ‘your britches or your life!’ *said from the bushes*) for the day he would be a man! Then sang about ‘when I’m human’, like the alligator from the princess and the frog...
Sandwell is generous like that! Spreading chicness through charity

When I reread it I thought for a horrifying minute I’d written ‘your bitches or your life’ and just thought people may believe a pimp lived there (then out walks Yianis in his garish clothing and the rumours may be believed!)
‘If I only were a man! Be-doop-be-diddlee-dee, I would walk with the finest, I would talk with the finest, if I only were a man!’

(They love me! Look at them smiling in such joy at my arrival - oh wonderful humanity!)
He'd be an awful pimp - I mean, not that pimps are good but you know, bad at pimping.
I'm only ashamed I couldn't think of anything else to rime with 'finest' and so had to repeat it - but the 'Be-doop-be-diddlee-dee' more than makes up for it because honestly that's how I sing it lol.
Oh! Capital idea, he wasn't keen on violence - though he assures you, he'd have been a crack shot (and don't forget that the world loves him, so any bullets aimed at him would miraculously swerve out of the way - and probably shoot Gabriel no matter where he stands)

aww no one tell him, he's pure , naively unaware of mockery.
lol he'd probably have the girls, but not use them, he'd feel bad, rather he'd just let them eat and dress well and partake of his house and give them all jobs in his company or something.
I couldn't think of anything at all, so you're farther along than I was.
poor Gabriel, I shouldn't laugh at his misfortune but I just imagined it hitting him in something not particularly lethal, like his ass.
Lear would be annoyed and a bit angry that they'd ask her to choose, because obviously she can't. Marrying Sandwell secures things for her family after all, and plenty of girls marry men that don't love them, so she's hardly in a rare and unfortunate position because at least Sandwell is good to her, if anything. it's unfair of them to make her play in their stupid boyish games.
if they must be so inclined, then she'll have them be tested. whichever one knows the most about her, she will chose- only they must ask each other the questions, she won't interfere.
for instance, Sandwell might know the names of her family members, but Yianis would remember things more important, like Lear's preference in books, or her wants and dreams. or even what she likes in general, like he'd know perfectly well Lear wouldn't have been at a spa because she hates them, they're a frivoulous and very vain waste of money.

I assumed he’d be a refined, dignified sort of beast. The well mannered type.
Also I imagine Lear knows it’s him right away. Also I imagine Lear had been away adventuring for months and when she returns sandwell didn’t even realize she’d been gone. And never saw her note.

He taught himself manners as it was his dream to be human, so stumbled upon books on etiquette.
She gets home and Sandwell is like 'oh there you are! I say, there's a fellow here who says he's your friend, been waiting for absolute aaagggeees for you' (and it's been like an hour)

I wonder if he naturally had the ability to read, or was taught by someone?
she'd be a bit confused. and probably a little disappointed she wasn't missed, or no one went looking for her. I suppose she was considering asking Sandwell if he wanted to go adventuring with her, they could make it a couples thing, but oh well.
lol imagine finding Yianis in a potato sack- or would he be dressed and presentable by then?

Sleyf In reply to Lear-is-not-amused [2019-10-14 18:21:00 +0000 UTC]
I had the thought that some old philosopher befriended him (he started off thinking he was talking to tree spirits or something, until Yianis showed himself and the old guy wasn’t terrified, even if everyone thought him a bit crazy). Then he taught Yianis about humans, maybe he even taught him how to speak properly (unfortunately for the world). Then he died, but he left Yianis many thing, perhaps even his tower-shack like Merlin’s rickety one in the Sword in the stone. So he’s like a father figure who allowed the dream to blossom and seem possible.
Sandwell may have found the note but misinterpreted it as something like ‘gone on a girlfriends’ romp’ or something.
I imagine he’d be dressed presentable by then! ‘Just between you and I, he showed up dressed in a potato sack.’

aw that's kind of sweet and cute. perhaps it was one of your characters? didn't you have one that was an inventor? I imagine he was rather lonely and though made it seem like he was merely obliged to let lear board with him to help him heal or in return for her help, but he was really glad to have company again.
maybe not like merlins shack. I always liked that cobwebby, dusty, abandoned castle from Jim Hensons "the story teller" where the old man and the dog are.
for months? perhaps he was so busy playing it up with the boys, or working on his latest set of attire he didn't even realize how long she'd been away- or assumed she was back and just wanted time to herself- you know how women are.
I wonder how Yianis would introduce himself, or explain why he followed her home.

Yeah I thought it would be more whimsical if he had a good experience with a human. Oh yes, Sky! With the wooden leg and glass eye, yes that makes sense, he’s not afraid of creatures like that and more intrigued, he might have made contraptions to allow Yianis beast to do more human things (but they’re uselessly mundane) like a complex egg cracker...for the most perfect fried egg. Humans love fried eggs!
He was thrilled but one can’t let that on, unless he had a bad experience before her and was just wary, but that ruins the warmth.
I kind of imagined the castle in the trollop on, you know the one the princess lives in with the door which has the pit in.
Sandwell is oblivious to girl things, she was most likely touring all the spa towns!
Yianis may just say they’re friends and she helped him out one day, and now he’s returned to thank her (Sandwell isn’t too pokey when it comes to details, he just heard that and naturally any friend of Lear’s is welcome and must stay as a guest!) though I expect Yianis explaining his clothes may not be that difficult either, if it’s a sack he could say he was robbed, if it was puffy sleeves, well he comes from very far away, their fashions are different!)
Although would he have the concept of twisting the truth to preserve feelings, or would he just tell the truth?

yes, it's definitely better, and I didn't mean for that particular story to be sad or angsty.
would they be very elaborately mundane, like in Pee wees playhouse, or the gremlins movie?
maybe he just was never able to make a human friend after Sky? seeing as he's a monster and all.
a little off topic but I imagine in being cold and Lear sleeping against his thick fur for warmth and in his head he's like "mine. this is mine."
yeah I think it's all the same castle isn't it like, they use the same set? I have to rewatch it to see
he's oblivious to Lear things too it would seem as she's hardly a spa sort of girl. also, lol *returns from adventuring, dirty and slightly wild looking*
oh well, at least he didn't carry on with other women while she was away- she hopes.
none of it would be hard to explain- and I'm not sure? I mean he's capable of empathy and understanding that discretion keeps you safe right?
though, which truth are you meaning?

I agree, out with the angst! In with the joviality. it's been too long since I was jovial.
Oh for sure like the Pee Wee ones, Sky is brilliant but also kind of overcomplicated. But he'd say that's part of the fun.
He tried once but you know, they ran away screaming...
'my precioussssss'
although I think at first he just viewed her as a potential friend and nothing more, but then began to feel for her and that made his desire to be human even stronger.
It's a set for sure but I always thought the storyteller lived in like a shack lol - clearly i never paid attention to the opening visuals.
'Oh you must have gone to one of those mud spas run by crazy hermits who whip you with nettles!'
Nah he wouldn't! He was probably busy hunting for fairies to ask if he could borrow some of their glamour or something Sandwellian.
Hmm yes I think so, I mean i'm trying to think about what he may learn from Sky, and as we know, Sky has a big secret he keeps specifically not to hurt anyone so he'd be able to pass that on, if not for self preservation, for the well being of others.
I meant the truth about loving Lear and wanting to take her away from her fiance, the man who just clothed him and invited him to stay! *misery at the emotional predicament*

I will send clowns and jesters your way to please you of course.
well, he's not wrong.
well "mine" as in she's his friend and he's keeping her. after all, being lonely for a while can make a beast a tad possessive. he doesn't hoard gold, he hords a single maiden.
I wonder if his desire to be human was so strong he was able to shed his skin, or if he decided to risk the danger of going to a witch. I imagine he has to be in the skin as long as he is out of it, so he swaps it out at night, or something.
oh no the storyteller lives in the ruins of the castle from all the stories.
"what? Sandwell... didn't you get my note?"
I imagine she'd ask him if he wants to go adventuring with her sometimes, as a couple and he still thinks its a spa and becomes very surprised and confused when they end up fighting a dragon. (i figured Sandwell wouldn't say no to trying a spa, for some reason, correct me if i'm wrong)
I am not sure if that would be something that need be taught? but it would be interesting if it was.
hm... maybe best not to tell anyone about that, or he might get thrown out and then lose his chance. at least see how Lear feels about it first before you let everyone know your intentions.
I imagine at night Lear knocks on his door and lets him know it's her so he unlocks the door to reveal he's in his beast skin, curled up on the bed- a far more comfortable one than back at the old castle.
she'd probably be wanting to know why he's followed her home, and he could tell her I suppose and express how very torn he is and asks her what he should do
