Description Not gonna touch this anymore*

done for conceptart.org's industrial design of the week

[link]

heres the copy/pasted description i gave it:

the iberian is a close support gunship allowing flexible firepower to be delivered from the blowing dunes of the desert to specific windows and rooms in urban environments.

the two forward guns are anti-infantry guns designed to tear through soft targets and lay down suppressive fire.

the two rear guns (folded back while not in use) are of a much higher caliber and fire sabot or explosive rounds, designed to bust hardened targets.

the cockpit canopy is made up of armored plates, the crew of 3 (pilot/gunner/gunner) are not only surrounded by a visual depiction of their external environment via monitors but also have a full frontal helmet display. video is gained through hundreds of small optical devices scattered around the hull while high definition multi-spectrum feeds are delivered through the 4 dome cameras, and each gun's dedicated sighting array.

main propulsion is gained via the wing mounted turbo blowers and primary lift is achieved through a combination of these and the two rear mounted turbo blowers.

the rear compartment can house 6 fully combat ready infantry who are protected behind armored shutters.

I also tough that it was in 3D!
Similarly I also tough that it was an unmanned aerial vehicle, in the line of Terminator machines, but you surprised me with the 3-crew explanation.
Also one tends to imagine that such futuristic machine can easily be fully automatic and largely autonomous, not only to not expose human crews to the chances of real combat, but also to execute risky missions without any reluctance or subsequent remorse.

Fantastic concept. I appreciate an artist who actually takes the time to dissect their design and justify the inclusion of each individual component.

When I first saw this I thought it was unmanned considering the large array of observation instruments. If it doesn't have an externally visible cockpit why not consider making it unmanned? Just a suggestion, I'm not trying to tell you what to do or criticize the design. The gunship is awesome either way.

i think at even today's current standards of flight retrofitting for unmanned is no large problem, it is the inclusion of a pilot that will soon govern designed. for this i imagine there being a pilot and 'gunner' but at the very least all of the articulated guns could easily be switched over to AI control, or controlled remotely through the troops stationed in the rear.

this looks like it could be a proposal for a new military gunship and it would look very impressive in real life. enjoy your day my friend

That thing looks nice, but it's a horrible design from a military standpoint. Exposed ammo belts = blah-- put them in canisters like real life ones. Also plate over all those little flat things-- those things are nightmarish shot traps for fragments and bullets alike.

I would advise putting the chin guns on a single turret, mounted directly under the nose; that will give them a far greater field of fire. Also add intakes for the engines.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Legato895 In reply to jtrainor [2007-12-19 09:44:20 +0000 UTC]

There is no gunship I can think of, or for that matter, any mounted minigun that has all of its ammo contained in a drum - it simply eats it too quick. And as for the β€œlittle flat things” I can only imagine what you are talking about.

As for the turret mounted chin guns, one chin gun with a roughly effective half dome of fire =/= 2 highly mobile guns on articulated arms that can fire in virtually any direction except up through the wings, and two larger caliber cannons with the same reach. In addition to being able to keep their angle of fire during evasive action they also have significant travel in almost all directions allowing for precise firing in heavy winds and movement.

Technically the ammo belts should be much smaller than they are now, however my excuse for that error is that they are now really bulked up and armored - for what its worth
Furthermore in regards to the blower intakes… which are facing up… apparently every other military helicopter with forward facing turbo prop intakes is doing fine :/

Gunships are going to get shot, however this one’s main countermeasure is killing the enemy first using dexterous and mobile weapons, primarily controlled by computer firing programs for near-instant and preemptive response.

So when can i order one? I presume your going to start producing them soon?
I'll have mine in a matte black... hehe...

In all seriousness. This my friend is pure awesome.
Other then the scale of a few things ( weapon calibre and length/width of ship - compared to 6 men ) it look's awesome. It's clean lines look very futuristic. But functional and military like at the same time. How would it land though? I imagine that it would lower the rear section and the soldier's would rappel or debus via a ramp, whilst the pilots would tempoarily be seated vertical? Maybe the pilots seats could swivel? Heh.. well. In anycase. Simply amazing.

Legato895 In reply to XaGrA [2007-11-04 06:20:57 +0000 UTC]

well, in retrospect the scale is pretty ambiguous... but if it could fire shells that big... holy crap!

Now thats looks effective, and even plausible in several ways. Reminds me of flying HKs from terminator of course, or something from section nines arsenal. I look forward to seeing it 3D rendered....and animated in a nice combat scene. A handful of these puppies taking out a whole infantry or a hoard of zombs or something. Your at the top of your game with this one man!

Legato895 In reply to boznic [2007-08-13 15:00:37 +0000 UTC]

literally my main goal in designing this was to break into a new area of VTOL propulsion for dropships/gunships/etc

and i think i did a fairly good job in my own humble opinion

as for modeling/animation its all in my head, and the drawing and idea are all im really good at... 3d modeling just isn't for me ;_;

yep, saw this yesterday... was really tired and didn't know what to say. But now i`m not so here goes.
This is one good piece of flier you got there... did you ... PAINTED IT ? i mean, with a tablet ? because it look so good. or maybe its 3D ?
dunno. very good job, looks so original..

I took a look at that web page. Interesting stuff out there but i think yours is the best.
I don't really give out many +favs... but this really deserves one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Legato895 In reply to ikarus-tm [2007-08-04 14:36:17 +0000 UTC]

nah, its all painted from lines... i would do more block modeling with paint overs but my 3d app's serial number exploded

thanks though. i often only like my ideas and despise the renderings, and after some deliberation, i really like how this turned out. as for the rest of the entries for the industrial design of the week, i know im bias, but only a few others really fit the criteria in my mind... maybe i would have got more votes if my picture link worked, but oh well, im glad i did it!

my only gripe is the sense of scale once again.. look at the size of those ammo links.. how is it possible for rounds that long and large to be fired with any precision thru barrels 2-3 times theirlength.. its not even pistol accuracy!

other than that I liked the Tau homage vry nice, esp the position of the thrusters.. arty!
