Description edit2:

put up a scrap file of just the tank with no background to distract from it [link]

i think i'll do this more often if the piece lends itself to it simply because my environments are in my opinion at least dragging the industrial design down with them... or i could just be a tad melodramatic!

edit1:

cooled down the image significantly - tell me if the snow is more snow-like! and slightly blurred the dilapidated foreground structure and soldier

for reference here is the original - [link]

tell me if im going the right direction!

///

tank details:

main cannon fires sub caliber discarding sabot rounds
secondary cannon (mid) normal ordinance
tertiary cannon (upper) 40mm AP rounds

remote upper turret for anti personnel work

mortar launched recon/spotter/firing solution drone rack

fold down munition pods (rocket/TOW/hellfire)

rear turret contains minigun for use against light vehicles and personnel

not so quick write-up - the SPHINX is a three treaded main battle tank designed for speedy bursts on clear straights and a large footprint allowing it to dash across frozen lakes that otherwise would be inaccessible to conventional heavy armor. another distinct advantage that this tank offers is its forward and rear turrets, which are located on their respective ends. this allows for peaking around corners with the best tool for the job while keeping a large part of the tank behind cover.

the crew of 4 all reside within the main turret, however the driver's position could technically be considered within the actual frame, however all aspects of control, are done via remote cameras, as there is no physical 'window'.

the bulk of the sphinx's length consists of its main track and its drive system and power plant, while the two 'front' outriggers provide steering and support for the massive main turret. while the main torque and horsepower is supplied to the main track, the outrigger tracks can function at the same speed as the main tracks, and are thus not dragged around. their main drawback is sheer power, but if required they could provide primary locomotion to a limited degree.

the armor of the sphinx is a mix of three unique systems with a few more additional counter measures. the static armor consists of rolled tungsten plating, while the proactive intercepting armor skirting detects oncoming projectiles, analyzes their mass and approximate damage and physically separate from the tank in order to meet the oncoming projectile head on. furthermore, key sections are covered in a crushed ceramic suspended in shear thickening fluid (STF). counter measures include standard ECM, chaff and smoke dispensers as well as a diffused heat source, and EMP shielding.

due to the tank's usually excess of power, the sphinx will often be seen pulling out injured comrades, or pulling in extra support to the field.

in regards to the render...

firsts:
rendering of snow
rendering of pine trees
Loose rendering
using textures in conjunction with layer styles

hopefully the gamma is ok on the pc monitors... photoshop is saying it will be significantly darker which bites, but oh well...

A very fascinating tank concept, very refreshing from the normal hover tanks and walker tanks that usually catch my eye when looking up concepts. I would never think of modeling a tank's lower frame after a snowmobile, but that is exactly what yours makes me think of: a single big tread and then two steering 'skis'. Another thing I haven't seen before: a multi-barreled cannon to give a variety of firing options. Very nice, as is the extra turrets. The idea of this mammoth Sphinx playing peekaboo is ridiculous, but not ludicrous: it makes sense to give this big of a target the option to stay out of sight... if it can find something big enough to hide behind. I also see a problem with steering: it likely can't turn sharply, given that the steering treads appear to be only able to go to no more than 45-50 degrees from their straight alignment, and then you have the main tread dragging in that case: obviously not a tank to use in urban combat outside of storming the main road after bombarding the city. Then again, given the total size of it, anything short of a bunker or the supports for a tall building likely wouldn't stop it from just plowing right through anything when it really gets going... not exactly a safe idea, but hey, if you're getting bombarded by a large number of enemies and you can't aim your cannon at them, plowing through a building and possibly bringing it down on top of you isn't that much worse: you'd likely scare all the enemies away (if they weren't killed by said falling building, be it them in it or under it) and given that it has excess power (talking about pulling out comrades (I'm assuming they're in tanks and such?) the Sphinx can probably still drive out of the rubble, depending on the building's size and how the building fell on top of it: a small tower might tip if the Sphinx rams through some of its main support, but as long as it keeps moving, it could be close to the outer wall again before debris crashing down on it. Over all, a very interesting and fresh design in my book as far as tank concepts go.

WOAH. I had a dream the other night with a tank in it, and I tried to draw it but didn't manage... it looked pretty much exactly like what you've drawn...!
- Which is damn good. I like the tone of the whole image. I seem to be having trouble loading fullview though :/

im quite fond of this tank, but i hate the environment - i am/was such a noob!

the raw tank design has its own deviation i enjoy much more

Interesting! (Favourited)

Design, military vehicles, tanks etc is very very interesting for me, all combined here. Here's a questionarie that I'd love for you to answer:

1. What kind of cost would this have compared to modern strike fighters and other main battle tanks? (number of MBT's for example)

2. What benefits does it have over strike fighters and other MBT's?

3. How is it transported? Clearly it cannot traverse stuff like most bridges in the world due to it's immense weight, and is too wide for most roads.

4. The immense profile and size makes it a very easy target. Camuflage is out of the question, and avoiding getting hit is more or less impossible regardless of the countermeasures I read about. Considering that even today's MBT 120mm fin stabilized penetrators can penetrate over 900mm of armor (almost one meter) and missiles can be unguided or even optically guided, the question is, how can it possibly hope to survive?

5. How could something so massive possibly be put back into action if a track breaks or gets destroyed? The crew could not fix it themselves due to the middle position of some tracks, and the immense mass of the whole thing. Seperate recovery vehicle?

1) since i really have no concept of prices for these things, i would say 4-5 times as much as an abrams for instance - but thats just wild speculation

2) here are the benefits as i see them...
-very low ground compression (it has a lot more surface area than a normal tank)
-frontal turrets allow the tank to peek around corners without compromising a great deal of its mass
-all electric locomotion would allow for relatively silent movement
-as mentioned in the frozen lands where this hypothetically exists, it could dash across frozen lakes that other tanks couldn't

3) when not on the field its side tracks and turrets could be taken off to fit in giant transport planes. in regards to its navigation of streets and bridges, it all depends on its environment and i don't have any problem seeing this navigate a standard 4 lane (with shoulders) highway as it leads its column into a city center

4) i'd like to believe that a mix of countermeasures and tactics could save it. right now its a balance of missile interception using the minigun on the back (like on a carrier) and highly advanced armor that breaks off and intercepts a warhead before it gets hit - other than that, for optics and dumbfire weapons i think this tank has almost passed the threshold of avoidance and must rely on absorption

5) i've kinda always played around with the idea of giving a tank solid rubber wheels along with a cog system so that if a track got destroyed, exploding bolts could shed off the remaining and it could still move around on massive wheels. in this case, only a few would be powered, but it would still allow for the same speed with the only draw back being the now massive ground compression and surface area it would gain - however all of what i just said wasn't implicitly mentioned for this tank, so other than that i haven't really thought about it

I don't care what you say, your background is amazing! you did a great job on the trees and the snow. I especially like the out of focus scout on the roof. Pluse you did a great job of displaying the obvious proportion of the tank too with the guy on the top.

The snow looks more like... Dust or 'white' concrete something. Maybe you could try adding a tint of blue and purple? Also, I think the perspective on the building in the foreground, with the soldier lying on top of it, seems to be somewhat 'off' when compared to the rest of the image.

Other than that, it's very neat!

just re-vamped it, is it more snow-y and less nuclear ash in your opinion?

Sinitron In reply to Legato895 [2007-12-28 19:10:17 +0000 UTC]

Definitively getting somewhere! It might be a bit dark, though, but that could be a result of some unseen weather condition for all I know.

In case you are in doubt, just try looking up some reference pictures... Though I guess that thought already strafed your mind, judging by the trees.

Keep up the good work.

hehe, actually didn't use any reference, and im pretty convinced that the darkness is just my gamma settings on my monitor as i can see the detail in the shadows very well, but it seems other people can't (curse native windows gamma!!!)

Sinitron In reply to Legato895 [2008-01-04 07:11:01 +0000 UTC]

I remember on my old CRT monitor everything was much darker, and with a brown tint, so when I viewed my drawings elsewhere the colors felt very unnatural and plastic-like. That was the CRT's fault, though, and not the actual gamma settings. I also remember that my friend got a new monitor with "much more vivid colors"... Unfortunately for him, about 98% of the world uses the sort that doesn't brighten one's day as much, so whenever he showed off his work the colors looked awful to the rest of us.

Technology. It can be both your very best friend, or a huge pain in the ass.

i'll see if i can make some legitimate changes to the building to make it look better - im getting a few comments on it, but it is to spec of the block model i relied on for this :/

and yeah, im learning about the snow! never done it before and i tried some overlay and color adjustment but none of it settled right

Legato895 In reply to SilentChaosT [2007-12-22 23:12:16 +0000 UTC]

technically its probably exactly as wide as the tank is, but as per the description one of its design features is the ability to travel over frozen rivers and lakes that other tanks could not - so i tried giving it a pose relative to its environment that suggested it was making this decision
