I remember that there was legend about Spanish knight named Cid. Generally he fought against Saracens (as Arabs were called in his times). When he died, soldiers tied his body to his horse and led "him" to battle. Saracens were so scared seeing him, they ran and battle was won. The picture reminded me about that legend.

And I love it, the details, shadows and atmosphere evokes the feeling of sadness

I think this is gorgeous! There is a lot of emotion in this and I love the horse's body. Those legs are fantastic and the colors as so lovely and sad. My only critiques is the horse head is a little small for the body and the technical aspect of riding. The rider's pose wouldn't be very comfortable and wouldn't hold him up very well. The way his leg and heel is postured, his weight is in his butt and that gives little to no balance. All it would take would be a single misstep or the horse suddenly stopping or even him having balance issues of his own, for him to just roll right off. Or basically if the horse does anything but walk very carefully and slowly and at a constant speed. The weight should be in his legs. So weight in his heels pushing them down and think of it as a straight horizontal line from his heel to his hips to shoulder (Ideally, but since he is injured there is always leeway like the heels will probably ride up and his leg would probably start going forward like that - if he was falling backwards - and the slumped shoulders. But this all takes away from balance and the weight in the legs part should be almost instinctual for a experienced rider)
A good future reference is if you search for pics of dressage. Dressage has a very strict and proper form, you don't always see the same seats and posture in other equestrian disciplines but it is very technically accurate. Plus it is based on how horses were trained for combat.

thank you for all the good tips! your comment's very interesting. obviously, i have little knowledge when it comes to the technical aspect of horse riding but i did notice on the photos i was browsing while working on this one that all the riders kept a very proper posture. still, i wanted to make the character here appear just barely conscious and ready to fall off, so i thought he probably wouldn't be able to hold his back or legs in the proper position. nonetheless, you've made a lot of excellent points and i'll make sure to pay attention to the aspects you emphasized if i end up working with a similar theme again. thank you for sharing the knowledge!

love how the horse's head is bowed at the same angle as its master
has it returned him home at the end?
