Description  A bull American mastodon (Mammut americanum),wandering around the coniferous forests of North america, during the late Pleistocene.
M. americanum, the American mastodon, is the youngest and best-known species of the genus. They disappeared from North America as part of a mass extinction of most of the Pleistocene megafauna, widely presumed to have been related to overexploitation by Clovis hunters, and possibly also to climate change.
The average body size of the species M. americanum was around 2.3 m in height at the shoulders, corresponding to a large female or a small male, but large males could grow up to 2.8 m in height and weigh as much as 4.5 tonnes.(
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon ).
I made this mastodon by Artrage and PS CS6,and Wacom pen&tab.
Hope you enjoy it and don't forget to help me improve my work by your critiques and comments...

If only the American Mastodon was still alive

It would be so nice to see them out in the wild forests and open grasslands where I live in Kentucky

Actually all the mammoths were not that big compared to modern elephants.the largest elephants belonged to the genus Palaeoloxodn.

But that look exactly like an Elephant just bigger

Leogon In reply to TheGfleet [2017-07-26 07:20:11 +0000 UTC]

The average size among the males was around 2.7m height that makes them smaller than indian elephants which can grow up to 3.4m.

Leogon, may I use the artwork of this wonderful image on a bookmark for a small museum in the USA? I will put a copyright on the image and give you credit. They want to print about 100 bookmarks for their bookstore. Do you have a non-watermarked version?

Leogon In reply to deslam [2016-04-11 18:51:56 +0000 UTC]

Is that a non-profit issue I wonder?I mean you're not gonna charge anything for those bookmarks?

deslam In reply to Leogon [2016-04-13 13:25:13 +0000 UTC]

It is for a very small museum for the Mississippi Delta. My company charges them to create the art and print them. They would probably charge in their bookstore to cover costs. The run is for 100 bookmarks only (and we charge them less than a dollar apiece). They gave me an image file to use, but it is not well done at all, but I will use it if necessary. But I really would prefer to make a nice bookmark for them instead of using ugly art!
Thank you for your reply!

OK,I made a decision.
I've uploaded all my works into the print section,so anyone can buy a print without a watermark in the prints store of DA.
But I 've decided to send an unwatermarked copy of my mastodon to you for free.Provided that you send me a scan or a photo of the bookmark after it is ready, and as you mentioned before, full credit and a copyright will be nescessary.
I'm waiting to hearing from you.

That is just wonderful news! We can even mail you some finished bookmarks if you like. If you will give me the wording you require for your credit, I will put that on the design and send you a proof.

So,you can send me your email address via a private note on DA,I'll attach a copy of this work.

There is a skull in a mexican Museum of an american mastodon, that would be from a 3.6 tall male mastodon. May be the biggest amercan mastodon skull ever found, a little bit more than 4 feet large skull.

could you tell me what parts need to be corrected?I appreciate your help

Cuthillius In reply to Leogon [2015-03-03 14:21:59 +0000 UTC]

I would have said if I could quite figure out...

I think you could be just a bit more heavy handed on the shading, and maybe make the tusks a bit crisper, and the eye seems a tiny bit off?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leogon In reply to Cuthillius [2015-03-03 14:27:49 +0000 UTC]

Agreed!I should work on the tusks soon. But the eye is alright.Shading can be enhanced a little...

Amazing work! The skeletons of these animals have been found in my region of the United States, including my home state of Ohio along with the neighboring states of Indiana and Michigan. To think that my home state many thousands of years ago was home to these majestic creatures, and what a sight these would've been to the first humans to settle here.

I always regret why those megafauna did not make it to our time...but evolution is evolution!many extinctions happened before, and will happen again.
