Sofia took another slow, sensual step, enjoying the feeling of the sand between her bare toes and the city she just turned to dust with her sole, although she was unaware of the second. Sofia was a tourist to the small country of Minitopia on the coast of the Mediterranean, which had recently opened up to the world under its new government. For centuries the nation had stayed isolated from the rest of the world, and for good reason.

The people of Minitopia were identical to the people of the nations around them… with one difference. They were the size of specks to a normal person. Minitopia had nothing valuable within its borders whatsoever, so it remained in a peaceful, undisturbed existence. However, in the latest election, a normal-sized (or a ‘giant’ as they’re called by the Minitopians) candidate had won. There had always been a few towns of giants in the country, who coexisted in harmony with the Minitopians, but they hadn’t meddled in the politics of the nation until now.

President Eleonora had promised economic reforms, and she did deliver on that front, although her policies were largely unpopular with the tiny population. Opening up the tourism industry seemed like a no-brainer to her, the country had some beautiful beaches that had been undisturbed by any normal-sized civilisation. Of course, thousands of cities were on the beach, and while their inhabitants thought they would be relocated to make way for beach tourism, Eleonora saw the cost of relocating them as an unnecessary expense, and decided to simply open up the beaches to tourists while the native cities were still there.

Sofia wasn’t a bad person at all, in truth she would never even hurt a fly. She knew about the size of the native population, but had assumed that they would never allow tourists anywhere near the native cities. This assumption meant that Sofia didn’t watch her step to see that she had crushed several cities and tens of millions of people beneath her soft soles.

Sofia wasn’t the only tourist however, and the high mortality rate of the tinies living on the beach was brought up to the government. An experiment was conducted where tourists were given maps of where tiny cities were so they could avoid crushing them, which resulted in a 97% reduction in tiny deaths per tourist. This policy was about to be implemented across the whole country, until statistics came out showing that tourist dissatisfaction increased by 0.02%, at which point Eleonora scrapped the whole idea.

And so, Sofia continued her walk along the beach, entranced by the beauty of the pure blue sea, the unpolluted sky, and the sprawling dunes, all while the tiny populace that had once enjoyed beauty now perished en masse under Sofia’s sandy feet, the few survivors having to live stuck between her toes or in a crevice on her sole, just to be washed away when she dips her feet in the water.
