Description The first of two pages or Rogue Trouper I produced as sample art in 1987 under the watchful eye of my mentor and friend, the late great Don Lawrence. I was just 18 and after all this time I still wonder why I'm not much better now at the age of 41!
The original art is long gone, but I recently found a photocopy of this and lots more long lost early art. Quite an eye-opener to me really. Enjoy!

Best,

Liam.

My son is gonna faint when I tell him you drew Dredd and Rogue Trooper. He is a super fan of both and he has seen your gallery. Dredd is a heritage of his father, me, while he has recently known Rogue Trooper because of the Wii game. He is ten, maybe you remember, he was shocked when he knew Frank Frazetta had passed away.

By the way, your writings are as interesting as your artwork.

The old classic issues are the best! Your dad should have some issues with my work in, though sadly I never did get to do Rogue in the actual comic. I mainly did Judge Dredd stories, P.J.Maybe was my invention, and I believe he's the 3rd most popular Dredd villain...

Take care, and keep drawing!

Liam.

I love this page. The wide panel in the middle is amazing.

I was trying very hard to be Colin Wilson - his Rogue work was seminal.

Thanks for the kind words!

Best,

Liam.

your stuff have more finesse and more polished look now but I see what you mean. There's a peak everyone reaches and then it either stays that way or we change style a bit.

this was done when you were 18...wow! talk bout a great mentor and just natural imagination and skill! Rogue Trooper was one of the characters that introduced me to the brit comics scene, knew him before i met Judge Dredd. just love how all his dead comrades' personalities are installed in his bag, helmet and rifle. really brilliant stuff!

This is the difference between great masters and the rest of the artists. It is a huge privilege that you share your reflections and your early work.

No difference - and I really wouldn't consider myself one of the great masters, but thank you anyway! So glad you're enjoying these old pieces from my past. It's strange for me rediscovering them. In ever case I can recall doing them as though it were only two or three years ago...

Take care and very best,

Liam.
