Description         "Why are we slowing down?" Ben asked. Calcifer didn't answer. Instead, he furrowed his brow and gently led the van off the side of the road.
"Cal?" Melody asked from the back seat. She moved her unplugged electric guitar from her lap to the floor next to the sliding side door.
"Something's wrong with the van." Calcifer answered, bringing the van to a stop.
"We still have gas, right?" Jareth asked, also from the back seat. Calcifer had an annoying habit of forgetting to refill the gas tank. Calcifer peered over the steering wheel at the gas gauge.
"Yeah, we've still got half a tank." Calcifer answered. They were now safely stopped on the side of the road. Without a word, Calcifer and Ben got out of the van and circled it, looking for an answer.
"There." Ben said, pointing to the problem.
        A punctured tire.
"Oh, great." Melody said sarcastically, now standing with Jareth by the open side door.
"What're we gunna do?" Jareth asked. His question was answered by silence. "Guys?" He said more pressingly. "Seriously, we've got a gig tonight that we can't miss."
Calcifer sighed loudly and grabbed his cell phone from his back pocket. His band-mates watched him flip it open and stare at the screen. "No service." He announced. "But like it matters, who would we phone, anyway?" The members of the Rabid Space Dragons all had matching expressions of frustration.
"What should we do?" Jareth asked.
"Two of hitchhike into town, and two of us stay here, yeah?" Melody said. They had a fair chance of getting picked up, the road wasn't too abandoned, but Melody and Calcifer started walking down the road, determined to get a head start.
"We'll meet you back here as soon as we can!" Melody yelled back to Ben and Jareth while walking backwards.
"Okay!" Jareth yelled in return. "See you then!" Melody waved and turned back around.
"How far is it to town?" She asked Calcifer.
"Not far, several miles, but it won't be fun to walk in this heat." Calcifer replied. Melody nodded, and watched Calcifer as they trudged down the silent road.
"Well, don't try to have too much fun." She said, reaching over like lightning and stealing the glasses right off Calcifer's face.
"Wha—Hey!" He replied immediately, tripping forward, reaching for Melody. She grinned mischievously.
"Too bad you haven't got your blood lens in." She taunted, referring to his red prescription contact lens.
"Yeah, too bad. Now I can't see a thing." Calcifer complained. "You better be careful, I could run into anything." He warned before crashing into her.
"That was so on purpose!" She exclaimed, having been pushed a few feet away.
"What? No way. I can't see, so it's not my fault." Calcifer stated, a hint of smirk on his face.
"Liar." Melody said, scowling playfully. "Here, Mr. Blind-Eyes, have your glasses back." She said, roughly pushing them back on his face.
"Gee, thanks." He said, repositioning them into their proper place just as a truck pulled over in front of them.
"Hey!" A man called to them, stepping out of the cab. A girl in her young teens followed after him. "We met your friends down the road. You need a ride into the city?" The man asked, walking up to them.
"Oh, yeah, I suppose." Calcifer started.
"Great! We'd love a ride! It's bakin' out here, hey?" Melody interrupted, grinning. "I'm Melody, this is Cal." She said to the man and the girl.
"Calcifer." Calcifer corrected, shaking the man's hand.
"I'm Harris, this is my daughter, Nancy." Harris said.
"Hello." Nancy said with a cautious smile. That was always the way it started, meeting new people. Melody and Calcifer, along with Ben and Jareth always had that impression on people. The word "punk" was one they were used to hearing. But it fit them fairly, considering the way they dressed.
Calcifer was a bit of a fashioner, and dressed queerly. Scarves, hats and bracelets were common for him, and he preferred wearing thin trousers and ripped shirts. His hair was dyed a not-natural, yellow-orange colour, which went great with his usual red-coloured eyes. Without his contacts in, his eyes were a great hazel colour.
Melody dressed similarly—in cut-off trousers and layered shirts. Her brown hair was cropped short in the back, and she had a drape of blue-tipped bangs covering her left eye. Her shoes were ripped and torn, and what used to be a bright blue colour, were now dreary grey, mud-splattered old things.
"Well, hop in the back. It's still hot, but we'll get you to town a lot quicker." Harris said, and Calcifer and Melody thankfully climbed into the bed of the truck. Nancy jumped in after them, and Harris got into the cab. The truck sputtered to life, and they pulled onto the road.
"Are you part of a band?" Nancy asked right off. She had to raise her voice to be heard over the sound of the truck's engine, and the sound of the wind created by the speed.
"You betcha. But I'll tell you right off, we're not the usual drab you hear on the radio." Melody said.
Nancy grinned. "I would hope not." She replied, which was blunt enough of an answer to satisfy Melody.
