Carl Sagan was deeply concerned about Ecology. He also was faculty advisor to the Cornell Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (CSETA). Cornell's administration wanted the animal rights group shut down-- Cornell is an infamous vivisector of animals and CSETA was a real thorn in their side. The Cornell administration let it be known that all student groups require a faculty advisor and that becoming the faculty advisor to THIS group was career suicide at Cornell. Carl Sagan, who long had pondered about animal rights, was also a free speech advocate, and tenured, and also the biggest draw that Cornell ever had... stepped up to become CSETA's faculty advisor. Cornell couldn't touch them. It's worth noting that his young protege, Peter Wilson was responsible for engaging Carl on animal rights issues.
