Thank you, Star! ouo
I've been practicing with proportion, mostly, and I think I'm making progress. I've got some sketches littered about, nothing too impressive. Most of my focus is being directed to uni work, so I've got more design work and fibers projects lying around than anything else. Discovered fibers is amazing, I would switch to a fibers major in a heartbeat if it were still available. I'm now knowledgeable on stitchery, book-making, and felting. ;u; I even made a Beakmonster doll and I think I'm gonna make more of my characters into felt dolls. They'll be great for 3D references. And sell-able, semi-easy projects.
And I've pretty much determined at this point that my BFA capstone will be world-building. Up until now I've mostly been having to generate new ideas for my projects, but my professors have shown interest in my personal work so I think I'm gonna start using that in my assignments.
No real good progress on landscapes, though, which is frustrating. Environment work isn't really a big focus in this university, so I've been looking online for references and tips. Considering looking for a grad school program on one of the coasts, and I've been trying to fit in as many travel trips as I can so big cities won't be so much of a culture shock. I visited Chicago last semester, it was great!
(sorry for wall of text, haven't spoken to anyone in forever. ;A

Heehee! Yay for text dumping!
Yeah, Fibers is a lot of hands-on stuff with fabrics and similar stuff. So we've covered like...stitching, book-making (which is a lot easier than it sounds), felting to make stuff like dolls and sculptures, and weaving. We're weaving baskets right now as our final project. Professor had us reach into this giant bag of random crap and whatever we pulled out we have to use all of in our "unconventional baskets." I got a bag of silver tinsel, ahahahaha, it's gonna be insane. I'll have to ask the professor for the pictures of my doll so I can post them; I can't take any myself since he's on display in the college at the moment. Same with my books.
The felting is really therapeutic. Gives you an excuse to stab something repeatedly mwehehehehe.
My world-building has mostly consisted of developing my characters. I'm debating revamping some of them, but I've mostly been working with Beak and my dragons. I had my folder of characters with my while I was working on the doll, so a lot of my professors peaked over my shoulder and commented on them.
I'm a little torn between developing the lore for the Beakmonsters, which are a little more artsy and domestic, and the headworld with my dragons and other characters which would involve more of the landscaping stuff and cultural research. Either way, I really need to get on improving my environments. I've been gathering references as I go places so I can practice with those, but there's not a lot of time for me to just sit down and work on personal things lately. I do really want to take a day to do some sketches around downtown, since I'm on the Mississippi River right now. I need to work out a schedule over the summer so I can make progress. I've gotta find a job, get a passport, and work on my license, too, which should be easier now that I won't be staying at my mother's. Finally out of that black-hole-of-depression-house, thanks to my sister. ;u;
And I like traveling a lot. I'm a little torn on cities, though. Not being able to see the stars at night is one of the biggest downsides of the city, honestly. I get disappointed every time I look up and see only a few of the brightest. I really enjoy the privacy and natural beauty of the country, but at the same time I'm finding a growing appreciation for city life and being able to walk wherever I need to go. I kind of enjoy public transportation, too, even if the drivers act snooty a lot. If it weren't so dangerous for a tiny girl like me, I'd like it even more. I'm planning on some trips to Europe if I can iron out the money part, to see if I like it any better over the pond. There are some art history trips the university offers that I'm gonna look into.
It's cool that you've been working on the Ctrl+Paint courses! I have the site bookmarked, but I haven't really rifled through it yet. How far have you made it through? Are the videos really useful? They've got some interesting previews posted on the home page, it would be neat to see what you've made so far.
Permanoobs is gonna cry, Star. They want you back! Don't nuke them they just want to love you.
And now you've got me all curious about the secret project. :I How dare you mention it so innocently like that? My curiosity is gonna kill meeeee. ;n;

Sorry for late reply! I only get on here occasionally these days.
Bookmaking does sound intimidating, but if you say it is easier than it sounds I believe you. Basket-weaving? That sounds intimidating too. But I'm not very hands-on unless power tools are involved... which is why I like digital painting, no mixing paints and cleaning up. It does sound like fun to be able to make your own dolls.
Keep practicing with those enviros... you'll need 'em for any big projects you have! Especially dragons. I need to get my license this year too- I waited awhile so the insurance wouldn't be as much as it is for a younger driver, but there is no point waiting any further. And a new ID. I don't look quite as I did when I was 15 or whatever anymore. XD
The light pollution got much worse in my town since they installed streetlights, but there was a time that the local astronomy club used to set up their 'scopes in the middle of town. I can still see the Milky Way on a good night, but I live on the edge of town. I'll admit that cities have their attractions. Be careful on those big city streets- I don't want anything to happen to you!! You need a big strong man to protect you at the very least, ah ha ha ha. Wait, that sounds totally sexist.* ;u; Europe is a very interesting place to visit from all I've heard. I hope you get a chance to visit there like you plan!
So far, I have worked through Digital Painting 101 and am now working on Ctrl+Paint Unplugged 'cause I need to know how to draw with a pencil before I can dive into PS. It's a great site... I've learned a lot from Matt Khor!! And from Sycra's Youtube channel as well. All sorts of good resources if you know where to look. I'm thinking of asking for a few of Matt Khors Premium courses when my birthday rolls around, ha ha. If I haven't saved up my pennies for them beforehand.
You can see my (slightly radioactive) progress on my Permanoobs SB, which doesn't show much promising stuff yet sadly. And I've been neglecting it. Need to get some more stuff up there!! I've kind of been going through a period of depressed demotivation and self-doubt concerning learning to paint- thankfully over now, I think. I don't have a brother or sister so I have to pull myself out of them by my boostraps, ha ha. I'm glad your sister helped you get out of yours- there is no point staying there, life is too short.
Oh, sorry!! It is a very secret project so I cannot say much, and stuff may change a lot before it reaches its final form. But I'll say a little just tease your further... I'll PM you 'cause I'd rather not leave even minor details out in the open.
