Description
My 1st of #worldwatercolormonth & #worldwatercolorgroup for July 2018.
I used this photo fav.me/d25osbg as a reference to look at while I painted my piece freehand (no tracing). The pose of the reference photo struck me as being a really strong pose, and of course the cat had such beautiful, unique coloring, that I thought it would work well for watercolor. The photo was taken by SkyebobPiepants and was offered as a stock photo by Ceta-Stock

I did a quick google search to try to figure out what type of tiger this is. I love its coloring: it’s not the standard orange with black stripes, but rather, a beige/faun color with just slightly darker tan-ish stripes. No black whatsoever! (At least, I didn’t use any black paint.) According to the following website, it’s just a color variation (not its own subspecies) that can happen when 2 “normal” colored tiger parents are both carrying the recessive gene for this. Apparently this color type is called a “golden tiger,” “golden tabby,” or “strawberry tiger.” (My husband said he thought it looked like a cinnamon colour when he saw it.) If I'm getting any facts wrong, please correct me--I'm not an expert on tigers--I only appreciate how beautiful God made them!

Although obviously not every day this month, I’m endeavoring to participate on the days that I can in #WorldWatercolorMonth . I painted this tiger on July 10th, 2018, and I probably spent a few hours on it… I don’t know exactly how much time I spent—I wasn’t really keeping my eyes on the clock. (Due to many hours of many, many technical difficulties, I wasn’t able to upload it online until July 11th. Oh well.) I did have to input it into photo-editing software in order to correct the color and lighting so that this digital version most closely represented the on-paper painting that exists in real life.
Neither this painting nor prints of it are available for sale. I created this piece to practice illustrating felines and painting with watercolor. (So, yes, this piece was created with watercolor pencils, water, and brushes on watercolor paper.) At this time and for the purposes of this piece, I want to focus on getting good at drawing animals instead of spending time attempting to paint scenery, hence the lack of any background in my painting.
Please feel free to critique this piece to your heart’s content. If you’d like to point out something I did well, and/or something I did poorly and need to work on in my future pieces, I welcome the feedback! After looking at the original photograph, please tell me… how’d I do?
Soli Deo Gloria!
