Oh man...I forgot the eyelashes? I didn't use a picture as a reference...does Gai even have eyelashes?
Of course he does!

Of course of course!! His eyes aren't as silly looking as Lee's but the three lower lashes are definitely there!

And I just listened to Kin-Ino saying Chouji. It was great. Something about that name, I guess!

Yeah...a book I have that I bought the convention writes Chouji's name as "Cyouji". So that's funny. It also puts Gai down as "Guy". Which is even FUNNIER. So Chouji's name really IS great.

"Guy" ... I've seen that a couple times, here and there. I guess "Nice Guy" pose is sort of a pun on that, unless they say it in Japanese. I don't know .... I think they've only actually used that term in the manga, but I could be wrong. Cyouji is a really weird way of putting it! I guess it's kinda like the "sh" that become "sy" sometimes. Just for fun.

LinkandLuigi In reply to lys-chan [2004-05-04 13:11:39 +0000 UTC]
The 'sh' being the 'sy' threw me off SO bad when I was younger. I had this doujinshi when I was younger and there was a character named Joe. But they called him Jyou. And he had two brothers named Shin and Shuu. But they called them Shin and Syuu. So for a WHILE I thought that he had THREE brothers and I got SO confused. More so than I should of but hey...I was like...13.
I should look through that book to see if there are any other name changes. It's the "OFFICIAL ANIME BOOK" so it's got to be SOMEWHAT legitimate.

Yeah, they should be correct on some level. Or maybe they like to Americanize/English-ize stuff, and we like to keep it all Japanized ... it's like we're going in opposite directions.
I guess you could be confused by the Shuu/Syuu if you hadn't seen that before. It's not like they actually sound anything alike, really. They expect us to just know these things!

LinkandLuigi In reply to lys-chan [2004-05-07 01:39:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. Back when I saw the Shuu/Syuu thing, I was relatively NEW to anime and my Japanese was limited to "Boku means me in the masculine form! YAY!!"
So I wouldn't expect my past self to know anything. I am slightly more educated now but I still laugh at the lameness of the 'Y'.

I tried teaching myself Japanese .. all the "me" words confused me though. I think I knew some of them at some point ... I never learned how to use any of them in sentences though, so I think I forgot. My "teaching" myself was mainly finding random words and memorizing them. They weren't words that made any sense together though. Things like colours and fruits and sun, moon, whirlpool, rabbit, egg .... I knew how to write all the numbers 1-10 once, too.

Teaching yourself a language NEVER works! (or at least for me so that much mean it never works).
Your method of teaching seems VERY similar to mine!! Learning random words at a time. I also employ the "anime lessons". Where you watch anime and pick up on random Japanese from that.

Heh. I guess I have "anime lessons" too but it's not like I'm watching them TO learn anything. I guess, though, that after enough time spent just listening to Japanese anime-people talking at each other, I learn a couple things. Sometimes they're useful phrases and sometimes they're just ways to say names and things. When I was watching Naruto 82, it was really amusing to hear Kisame's name said. I don't even know why. I've also started picking up on the use of "desu" and how annoying it can be coming from certain characters.

LinkandLuigi In reply to lys-chan [2004-05-09 17:56:12 +0000 UTC]
Oh I definitely don't watch anime TO learn! That would just be lame. If I heard of anyone doing that, I would have to smack them around a bit.
I love picking up "desu". Because that's the most obnoxiously butchered word. Well...that's I recognize. I was watching Fruits Basket a while back and the main character would say it RANDOMLY. I don't know why but she said it when it wasn't even necessary. And the only reason I knew that was because the subtitles explained that. And then they'd have the sentence in the subtitle and they'd put "desu" at the end. So a subtitle would say, "What are we going to do now, desu?" And she'd pronounce it "de-su" as opposed to "des". Isn't "des" how it's SUPPOSED to be pronounced or does it not matter?
It was crazy.

lys-chan In reply to LinkandLuigi [2004-05-09 18:09:26 +0000 UTC]
When they say "des" it's not bad, it sounds natural even. But there's this kid in MaLoki who says "desu" at the end of EVERY sentence, and I think her intent is to sound cute/childish and it just bugs me so so so much. She says "hai desu" even, to say "yes." I would be entertained to see the "desu" written out in the subtitles, though.

LinkandLuigi In reply to lys-chan [2004-05-09 18:14:28 +0000 UTC]
Yes!! That's exactly how the character on Fruits Basket does it!! She says "desU" and says things like "Hai desu!" and she does it JUST to be cute. (Or maybe SHE doesn't do it to be cute but I think it's DONE to be cute.)

Arg! I think she probably does it to be cute. Some people just like to be as cute as possible. And I always feel hypocritical for criticizing people who like cute, but oh well.

I like cute...but not when they TRY to be cute. And usually, I like random things that are not really all that cute but I find them cute.
Like...I think we're SUPPOSED to find Konohamaru to be cute or something...but I don't find him cute at all. However, I find Kiba to be absolutely adorable but I don't think he's supposed to be at all.

I don't like Konohamaru (MOST of the time. that last episode he was in, I liked him alright) but I love his voice. Even if it is cute. It doesn't annoy me. Yeah, though. Things that are supposed to be cute are just annoying. But I like when there are cute aspects about a character (Kiba, or Leeeee~) that can then be used to define their entire character if one wishes. That sort of thing is the best.

I was GOING to say that Lee was cute too but I think Lee's SUPPOSED to be cute and lovable so I didn't. (Though with him, it worked.)
Konohamaru has a cute voice. He's Chopper and Pikachu. HAHA!! Woot.

Yeah, I know!! I love that. The Chopper songs are so great. And that one other one she sang for Sanji or something. I haven't gotten to Chopper in the actual series yet.
And Lee is probably supposed to be cute, you're right, but he's also supposed to be amazingly cool and weird/freakish, so it's okay for him to be cute besides. It's the stereotypical cute-kids that are bad.

Yes! I like the Little Sanji song. Or...I did. I kind of got sick of it but that's okay. The Chopper songs are just silly. I call one of them the "Bust Da Moves" songs because he sounds like he's Bustin' da moves. Chopper doesn't come until like...episode 80 or something. But it's okay. He's not one of my favorites.

Did you listen to it too much to get sick of it, or did it just happen one day? I've probably got too much music to get sick of any song that I really like. (I get sick of the mediocre ones easily enough though)
Episode 80? I'm like ... 10 away from that or something. And stuck there because I don't have any space to download more. Mmph. I just wanna hear him ....

Aw man...I have no way of giving you more. And I think the subtitler group only goes up to about...90. So you'll have to stop THERE. I have them on DVD but I guess that doesn't help you at all. Maybe I'll make you a sound clip just for fun!
Yeah, I liked the song but it was never really one of my favorites. Plus, all my friends liked it too so I'd have to listen to it when they put in their music and when I put in MY music and pretty soon I started skipping it every time I heard it starting. I like more upbeat songs anyway for some reason.

Yeah, once I catch up with the fansubs I'll be stuck again for a while. Then maybe I'll read the manga if I can find that somewhere, just so I can seem like I know what I'm talking about.
Sometimes after not hearing a song I once liked in forever, I'll find/listen to it again and be just in love with it all over again. Sometimes I find such a song and am disappointed in how lame it sounds now. I dunno whether I like upbeat or ... downbeat(?) songs better though. I probably like both.

I have all the manga on my computer currently. That, I'm willing to somehow get to you if you want. But I know there are lots of places to get it. Or at least...there were when I was trying to get it. I don't have many of the recent chapters because I haven't been quite in touch with One Piece as I used it. One Piece used to be my OXYGEN. I couldn't live without it.
I'm the same way with songs. I'll hear it on the radio and go, "I love this song! I remember loving it before!" and then I'll download it. It'll sort of lose it's magic after a while but at least I'll get to hear it whenever I want!

I'm always sad when I lose interest in things ... (AHA~ this relates to both your paragraphs, sort of!! Go me!) But I did that with One Piece too. Except it was after like ... a month or two of being in love with it. That's pathetic. At least I still like it though, even if not to the extent I once did. It'd be just lovely if you could send the manga some time! Or I could find a site ... or both methods even.

Oh I was obsessed with One Piece for so long. And it was like...full fledged pathetic obsessed. I still love it a lot but I can't get into the current story. It just isn't grabbing me at ALL! I feel like flying to Japan, finding Eiichiro Oda and bopping him upside the head for not only changing his drawing style so that it's not as cool looking but also for not having an interesting plot for a while!

Wow, he changed his awesome art?? I don't know any of this. How odd ... and now I'm really intrigued.
I meant to be obsessed with One Piece for a long time, but Kazaa was a major hindrance because NO ONE had episodes and if they did it took forever to download from them. So I lost interest due to lack of availability. And then before I could get back into things Naruto took over. So that's where I'm at now. Whether one is really better than the other I don't know. I just stick with whatever I'm hooked on.

Yeah, I don't compare them. I used to boycott Naruto because everyone I knew stopped liking One Piece and stopped posting at forums and stuff because they decided that Naruto was better. So I was like: "No! I shan't watch it so that I won't follow the crowd!"
But I watched it anyway.
Yeah...his style...I don't know how to describe it now. It just doesn't look as good. Zoro and Sanji are particularly affected in negative ways. Luffy sort of too. The women are thinner and have bigger chests but I don't care that much about that as much. The whole art change makes me sad though.
The subtitler group for One Piece is SO slow and SO inefficient. I mean, the Naruto people come out with it a day or two later. The One Piece people are putting out two a month and trying to catch up with the series! ARGH!!

The only thing I boycott is YuGiOh. And I tell myself that's okay because I DID make myself read a few chapters in Jump before abandoning it completely. If you give something a chance and still don't like it, it's alright.
I wanna see pictures of the new style. Yar~ His women have always been really thin with big chests, haven't they? I didn't know it was possible to become more so!
I love the near-instant-ness of Naruto so much. I don't really think about how it isn't the case with some other series ... it's great to be part of such an obsessive group of people.
