The Equestrian Incident
Starbloom's Death
Starbloom was rushing to the stellar research lab. All scientists aboard the ship had been called to their stations to study the celestial anomaly before it closed.
The ship was in chaos from the recent asteroid impacts. Starbloom had to flatten against the wall as droves of engineers and security teams ran through the various corridors of the ship.
“Starbloom, you're late!” A heavy set brown stallion with a gray mane barked at her, as she made her way into the lab. “Hurry to your station and get to work!”
“Yes your highness” Starbloom muttered going to her station.
“What was that?” The stallion asked peering at her.
“Nothing sir!” Starbloom quickly looked out the window into the rift, before searching the large book collection she had access to. Her specialty was research and analysis so it was her job to search through the library of books and locate information on what they’d run across.
“Professor Allele is being more of a hard flank than usual.” A dark berry colored mare with lighter berry mane commented moving next to Starbloom. It was Chronicle, her partner in the stellar analysis department, she was also her closest friend aboard the SESEV.
While Starbloom did the research, Chronicle recorded everything they’d came across for later review and analysis. It always amazed Starbloom how Chronicle could look at something once and later recall in minute detail what she saw. She was also an expert at multi-tasking, she could observe something, draw a detailed sketch of it, and write a good report about it, all at the same time.
“Yea... but I think he's just concerned over what is going on.” Starbloom agreed as she skimmed through the book she was holding. She had already looked through three, but so far she was only drawing a blank.
Starbloom started to read the papers Chronicle was finishing, they hadn’t found anything in the books they’d brought. There was little to go on regarding just what the anomaly was and what caused it.
She was thinking things over when she caught a snippet of conversation from the ponies around her. “... then I heard he started yelling at her for no reason...”
“Well I heard it started over a bagel, she took the last one...” Starbloom folded her ears back trying to block out the idle gossip as she tried to focus on her research.
“Starbloom, can you believe that?” Chronicle’s question snapped her attention away from her work.
“What? Sorry Chronicle I wasn't paying attention...” Starbloom answered looking over at her.
“I just heard that a maintenance worker attacked her boss with a wrench. No reason behind it. He was just coming over to let her know, her shift was over, then she attacked him.” Chronicle said with a worried look on his face.
“Don't worry Chronicle, I'm sure it's just an isolated incident, besides there has to be more to the story than that,” Starbloom tried to reassure her, though her mind drifted back to the gossip she just heard. “Come on, we've been working hard let's take a break.”
“You go ahead, I have a little more work to take care of.” Chronicle replied, returning to her work table to finish some last sketches.
“Okay I'll see you in about an hour,” Starbloom smiled moving to her hooves, “I'm going on break Professor Allele.”
“Fine, just don't take too long,” The stallion huffed barely glancing up from his paperwork.
Starbloom rolled her eyes as she left the lab and started down the hallway. While she walked she joined up with a gray coated stallion with a white mane.
“Dij... Can you believe that asteroid strike?” She asked the stallion, while they walked together passing by a white stallion with a short blue mane and tail wearing a bowtie.
“Never mind that...! I heard that the only EVA team that survived brought something on board!” the gray stallion answered. “I heard it was so big, that it barely fit through the airlock!”
Starbloom thought a moment before remembering some of the gossip she tried to block out, “I heard it was glowing red.”
“No kidding!” the stallion exclaimed looking at Starbloom, “Any idea what it is?”
Starbloom shook her head, “Not a clue, from what I heard they won't let anyone near it. It's locked up in the cargo hold.”
The stallion then ran off, “I'm gonna go try to see it!” He yelled back to her as he goes. Starbloom just shook her head sighing, turning down a different corridor to go to the cafeteria.
After a quick meal, she started to softly hum a song to herself as her mind wandered back to her work.
She was so preoccupied with thoughts of the anomaly that she didn't hear the hoof steps of a pony coming up behind her until it was too late. A knife cut into her side, causing a scream of pain and an instinctual kick knocking the assailant back. She spun around, eyes wide.
“C... Chronicle...?! What are you doing?!” She yelped watching her co-worker move back to her hooves taking up the knife with her magic.
Chronicle didn't answer, her eyes blank as she lunged forward and slashed with the short blade again. However, Starbloom was ready this time; the enchanted crystal in her headband shimmered to life as its magic stunned Chronicle and knocked the knife away from her.
“Chronicle! Stop this please!” Starbloom pleaded, “Whatever is wrong we can fix it alright?” She said talking a step back, as Chronicle got back on her hooves taking the knife up again glaring at Starbloom.
With the knife raised, Chronicle charged at her again. Starbloom prepared to knock her and the knife back again, only to feel something slash across her cheek and left eye, cutting through the band on her headband. She let out a sharp cry raising a hoof to the gash, the crystal clattered to the floor as her headband dropped.
She looked over with her good eye seeing an earth pony stallion she didn't recognize standing next to her. She figured he was with the medical department though since he was holding a scalpel in his muzzle.
She backed away from him and Chronicle pleading, “Please... don't, this isn't how ponies are supposed to act...”
With her magic Chronicle thrust the knife forward stabbing Starbloom in the right shoulder blade. Starbloom dropped to her forelegs and cry out in pain. She rolled onto her side, trying to pull the knife out. Looking up the stallion and Chronicle stood over her.
“No... Please... please don't...” She begged. Her eyes widened as the stallion towered above her with the knife. With a quick flick of his muzzle, he slit her throat; causing a gasp of pain. She held her throat with her hooves, trying to alleviate the bleeding.
Her eyes teared as she looked at her friend and the stranger as they stared down at her. Her vision started to fade as blood pooled beneath her. The gash throbbed as she tried to scream for help, but to no avail.
Just before everything went black, with a flash of metal and the sickening squish of a stab, Chronicle and the stallion began fighting each other, in the distance she could hear other ponies crying for help as a riot began.
