Description OMG I thought I would never get this done

CS5 decided to die like a million times with this...

I was ESS for ~Wandering-Day-Dreams this year and she asked for a Friesian. So here is a Friesian mare running through a snowy background.

I spent way more time on the background than I actually did on the horse lol (and it damn near killed me)

I used a bunch of refs

And even with all of that it still looks weird.

Happy Holidays ~Wandering-Day-Dreams ! (I'm sorry I'm not that good at any sort of realistic)

Here for #FeedbackFrenzy . Let's go~

I can tell you worked hard on this, good job. 'u'

A few things though, of course:

The anatomy is off. A horse's head is not that big compared to the rest of the body, and the hind quarters are far too small. You can see here: [link]

I can appreciate having long, flowy, elegant hair, but on horse, it's kind of impractical, cuz it'd get motted, tangled, dirty, etc.

The background does look REALLY good, there was much care and detail taken into account, but it's too blurry. The detail lessens the further away things are, but the tree right of front is out of focus. Not only that, but it's closer in the foreground than the horse is, so technically, the horse should be behind it. Also, comparing the size of the horse to the fence, that's either a huge horse, or a small fence.

It seems kinda like there's too much snow in the air, not only would there not be that much snow if you were under a tree, but it just kinda distracts away from the picture.

On a final note, the lighting of the horse doesn't correspond with the lighting of the background. Try shading horses from different angles to get some practice with how the lighting would look.

Welp, that's my two cents, hope I helped some~ 'u'

Hi there! I'm here to bring you this critique as a part of a.deviantart.net/avatars/f/e/fโ€ฆ " alt=" " title="FeedbackFrenzy"/>'s event e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sโ€ฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

A huge round of applause first because I can't draw animals and am always in awe of people who can XD e.deviantart.net/emoticons/d/dโ€ฆ " width="29" height="21" alt="" title="Dance!"/> I especially like how you shaded it and how the highlights bring out the details like the hair on the mane/tail and the muscles of the horse.

A few suggestions as to how this deviation could be improved:

ยค 1) Proportions of the horse: The mane and the tail of the horse both look a little too long. It's ok to exaggerate it sometimes (since it's blowing in the wind in this case) but not too over D: Also, the hind legs of the horse are too short compared to the front legs/the horse body in general.

ยค 2) Details in the background: I see from the description that you spent more time on the bg than the horse, and I love it, the tree especially. Just a small suggestion would be to place even more detail so that people who look at the horse first then at the bg wouldn't just gloss over it real quick. Right now all I see is a tree and the mountains. You could probably add a little more (maybe a frozen pond, houses, more trees) depending on where the setting is. It'll bring more colours, thus a variety, and impact to the picture in general e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sโ€ฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Over all it's still a wonderful composition e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/hโ€ฆ " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart"/> The snowy background and soft light blue/white give off a calm feeling that suits the picture completely. Great job and I hope you find this critique helpful! a.deviantart.net/avatars/i/l/iโ€ฆ " alt=" " title="ilikeitplz"/>

I love the way she looks so free ripping through the snow with that beautifully long mane and tail whipping around.
I really appreciate all the hard work and trouble you went through to make this for me. It really couldn't be anymore perfect. This has definately brightened up my holiday season so much more.
Thank you again for this lovely gift and I wish you Happy Holidays aswell and I hope you have a fantastic New Year.
