I'd been wanting to do a painting of how Kylo Ren found Vader's mask. Some MOVIE SPOILERS BELOW if you still haven't seen it, please avoid reading:My take would be that during time training under Luke, Luke confided in him fully what happened to Vader and what he did with his father's body. Then once he was corrupted by the Dark Side, Ren personally desecrated the bonfire burial site, which would have become a dead section of ashy Endor forest. I guess theoretically in 30 years' time foliage might have recovered the entire area- but I really wanted to depict it as a dead section of forest.

I really like this. I think it accurately represents how disturbed and macabre Kylo has become, and the as-of-yet un-revealed motivations he had for going to the dark side. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is how Ren got the mask, I think it's almost a certainty that he exhumed Anakin's body himself. It's a very unsettling point of the plot, and one made all the more uncomfortable because of how it is never outright stated how it came into his possession in the movie proper.

The artist did a fantastic job here!
On a pure storytelling level, Kylo Ren's... he resembles more of a disgruntled adolescent than a proper cool badass villain. Also - personally - to me, his presence Pretty much just further confirms that Vadar is definitely one-of-a-kind; no predecessor or successor, one-and-only.
Rey was right; he'll never be as strong as Vadar - he lacks both Vadar's overwhelming aura and his chilling cool.Β When he and Rey dueled - if it was Vadar he'd totally be calm and say "I can feel your hate. I can feel your anger. Let them flow through you!" What happened to that, Kylo Ren?

Yup, Mr. Ramondelli is a real powerhouse in the art world!
I think that's the intent though, Ren is well and truly unbalanced. He's a fledgeling Sith, which is probably why Snoke has such interest in preening and perfecting him. The bitterness he feels in defeat at the end of the movie will likely give the Supreme Leader just the mixture of ingredients to make a perfect Sith- he's already got the "family trauma" and "massacre of fellow Jedi" parts down. Let's not forget that Vader was an arrogant young man as Anakin Skywalker, the aftermath of his defeat at Obi-Wan's hands is what led to him really hitting his evil stride!Β
Vader is a lot to live up to! That's probably part of what will set him apart from Vader as a villain though, Ren's envy and feelings of inadequacy, the idea that he has something to prove through surpassing others. Alternatively, Vader was driven by loss and hate. He saw certain people(Tusken Raiders, The Jedi, Obi-Wan) as responsible for his own personal tragedies and took out his fury on them accordingly. While Vader had people to hate and destroy, Kylo Ren has people he sees as obstacles for him to surpass, the first of which being his father Han Solo.

Do you use any special brushes for the gritty ground/ash? I would so love to see a 100% resolution glimpse of a section of this just so I can see your brush strokes and how you manage to make it look so detailed. I mean, you don't really paint every little tiny broken bit of bramble/charcoal on the ground there, do you? Or DO you? Or do you use photographic elements somehow and blend them in?

It's a combination, really. I mix a lot of hand-painted elements with some textures added in from photos. Usually I'll take a texture ( scraped metal, chipped paint, wood, etc) and lay that under my lineart and set that layer to like multiply or hard-light. So the ash areas are a mix of line drawing, hand-painting and some texture I threw in.Β
