Description
"Oh my poor little baby, tell mommy what's wrong. It's OK, I'll make you all better."
The gentle voice drifted over to Kiara-Ne as she entered the apparently deserted maintenance bay, and headed over to one of the tanks.
"June, you there?" She called out.
Some cursing and grumbling came from within the armored vehicle, and a shapely orange echidna pulled herself up and out of one of the cupolas on the roof. Her right arm was robotic, and a couple of mechadendrites were extended from between her knuckles. Grime and grease were smeared on her face. She looked down with green eyes and saw Kiara-Ne. Immediately she burst out in a big smile.
"Kiara!" Cried June-La.
Kiara-Ne grinned.
"You talking to the tanks again?" She asked, causing June-La to chuckle.
"You know my babies." She replied. "Sometimes they need a little reassuring. So, what brings you down to my den?"
"I've just got some great news June." Kiara-Ne said. "They finally promoted me to Captain!"
June-La squealed with delight at her friend's good news.
"This calls for a celebration." She said.
Kiara-Ne blushed a little and shock her head.
"That's OK June, I know you're busy. We'll do it some other time."
With that, Kiara-Ne waved to her friend and left the bay. June-La smiled. She had other plans.
The door flew open to Kiara-Ne's quarters, and the two echidnas stumbled in drunkenly. Both lent on each other for support.
"June, I don't know how you conned me into drinking so much, but thanks." Kiara-Ne slurred.
June-La smiled. Her mechadendrites extended, two from between her knuckles, and one from her wrist. With them, she gently combed Kiara-Ne's hair, before stroking one of her dreadlocks tenderly.
"What can I say Kiara." She replied "I wanted to make sure you had a good time."
June-La looked into Kiara-Ne's eyes and continued, her voice becoming more serious.
"You're very special to me Kiara. We've been friends since childhood, and I don't know how I could have made it this far without you. No matter what happens, remember, I'll always care for you."
Before Kiara-Ne could respond, June-La lent in and kissed her. Kiara-Ne just stared, stunned. June-La smiled and started to leave the room. As she got to the door, she turned and reached into a pouch hanging from her belt. She pulled out a gun and tossed it to Kiara-Ne.
"I made it for you Kiara." She said. "I had a feeling you'd be promoted one day. It'll serve you well."
With that, she left.

Kiara-Ne opened her eyes and looked at June-La's name engraved on the wall. It was surrounded by hundreds of other names remembering those who had died or gone missing in service to the Legion. Her friend had disappeared the next day, reported killed in a secret mission. Although it had happened years ago, the memories were still fresh in Kiara-Ne's mind. She turned and left. As she walked, her hand drifted to her gun, her fingers tracing over the butt of the handle. A name was inscribed there: June-La.

A new character who has worked her way into my mind. Hopefully with her, and her relationship/friendship/interactions with Kiara-Ne, I can explore more of what makes them tick.
Before anyone asks or comments, don't read anything into what their sexuality might be. It's not something that I've thought about yet.
