Description Thank you to all the people who asked me to make this tutorial, I'm so glad you like my latex ears so much!

I'm proud of my crazy job and enjoyed to show the making-of process, also because I could show the large amount of work hours that are behind every single new model.

If you have more questions, please feel free to ask them, I'll try to be helpful.
If you want to copy this tutorial, feel free to do that, but please remember to credit me and put a link to my website.

They look great!  A set of gills & webbing between the fingers would look great, too!

thank you so very much, since i have such tiny ears it's hard for me to get ears made for my own ears, this helped me so much.

These are absolutely gorgeous!

Would it be alright if I ask what sort of clay you recommend, specifically?

Do you think making a mold with model magic would work fine?

would you do a commission for something along the lines of this?

What a great job that would be. I gues I can't complain too much, though. My boss lets me use the foam and equipment to make crazy things like life-size stargates [link]

Still how cool would that be

Thanks The new version is already in process. Well, it would be if I had not decided to add a few thousand extra little changes... It will be ready in September for MountainCon IV. I've made way too many promises for it not to be I felt so bad last year when it died... as we were setting it up, no less I later heard that there was a gentleman who came to the convention JUST to have his picture taken by it. It was at that point that I promised myself that this new version would be the best that I could possiblly make it

I can't wait for seeing the next version, though.... I guess it will be awesome!!

Thanks very much for an excellent tutorial. I've only recently gotten interested in making my own props and prosthetics (lifesize, at least; I did make a lot of miniatures once upon a time XD), and while I've got experience with Sculpey, and Plaster of Paris is fairly self-explanatory, latex is definitely one of the less-commonly used mediums for the amateur. I'm happy for all the tips I can get!

Faving for future reference, as well.

Excellent job on the tutorial, and I thought I'd share a tip. When we were casting small sculptures in college, we did a similar process (except using clay instead of latex) and the way we kept on side of the mould from sticking to the other was to just brush on the slime from a block of soap! Just sit a bar of soap in shallow water and swipe your brush over the bar, then coat the plaster before pouring the other side on. Cheaper and not as messy as using slip.

They're beautiful! And it's great to see all of the work that goes into it, I never really appreciated all of that until seeing it XP

Can you use the same method roughly for casting other things (like, say, hand coverings, or prosthetic noses)?

all the way! Thank you for doing this!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lluhnij In reply to taeliac [2007-06-05 18:44:42 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

And yes, for noses the process is the same. For hand coverings I used to modify latex gloves, because I only had to make single pairs, but if I were to produce a good number of the same model, I'd make them this way, sure.

wow, you know, maybe I ought to try making something along the lines of prostetics. I'm sure I could come up with something amusing. Well, now at least I have a general idea how one would go about doing so if I were ever to be fool hearty enough to try such a thing. Looks lovely by the way, they look WAY better worn than just there.
