16 NOV 07 --> sweeeet! This just got accepted to *PsychedelicTreasures !!! That's my first club and my first submission so I'm having a little me party lol. My next one is already finished and will be up soon. Check out our club, it rocks!

9x12 2007
various inks and pencils on sketchpad
photo croppedwith brightness and contrast adjusted in psp

This is my entry for 's "Abstract Mania" contestsubmitted on Nov 14, 2007 and my first art submission to the club!!

***UPDATE 15 NOV 07***...
Here are some details about the drawing and the thinking behind it (this was requested)
The piece is named after the concept that the evolution of man from wild beasts may have been inspired initially by hallucinogens which pushed reasoning abilities to new limits. My wife and I both hate the early evolutionary dinosaur chicken thingy. I was simply embodying my theme (much of the picture is inside a psychedelic thought balloon emanating from the chicken's forehead) as well as follow the spontaneous theme of the contest.

And there are at least 14 faces in the picture

Learning the limitations of my scanner (only goes up to 8x11 doh)

That's really quite awesome. I like how you add shading to give the image depth, and there are some really nice faces depending on how you look at the drawing. Wonderful work.

I tried 2 other images and styles first. By the time I started this, *Relic-57 had the eventual winning picture up [link]
When I saw his shading, I knew I wanted to do something similar. I was glad that I at least went the right direction as I initially had strong suspicions that something more like line art or less surreal might be preferred by the judges.
This was the first time I've ever combined pencil shading with ink. I recently purchased my first pencil set. I also just possibly revived a .05 pen so my next piece may be the straight ink surreal style I've been wanting to do since I joined DA.

Thanks for your comments!

I've bought different pens and stuff and you do notice a difference in how they work (especially when you draw as tiny lines as I do). There's typically a difference in how quickly the ink comes out and how it works and feels at different velocities. It will be interesting to see your next drawing, I presume you'll post it on Psychedelic Treasures? Is it the Wormhole Nr. 49?

Btw, I suspect that you are using Firefox hehe

Lol, this drawing's name is kind of a riddle. I wasn't even going to give that away and just see if someone got it.

With regard to tools, I've never used the "right" ones before. We would use bic pens on blue-lined school notebook paper. We'd color them with highlighters.
And I basically quit doing traditional art for a long time. So when my wife encouraged me to start again I thought "why not approach it seriously this time" so I started finding out what other artists here are using. (Check out the short interview with *Bernardumaine in my journal!)

The funny thing was the more I looked around, the more stuff I realized I already had from paints to Rapidographs. *inthename really influenced me, not only from her awesome inks but also by welcoming me to the site and being a constant source of encouragement. She got me addicted to ink.
Yes, there is an amazing difference between scribbling on notebook paper and inking on vellum. I've played guitar for over 22 years now. Every amp/guitar combination feels, sounds, and plays different. So when it feels 'right', I actually create more freely, easier. I think that's just true of any creative process.

ps..why the Firefox comment? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

I'd have to ask what's your mana There are many interpretations of the word.

I've never used vellum before, but it sounds interesting. I have on occation used photo paper for printing as these are treated and absorb ink very differently from normal paper.

No you're not really doing anything wrong, I just presumed you were using Firefox due to the link you gave me to the winner picture of *inthename 's contest. You gave the link directly to the thumbnail image instead of the link to the page, which is so easy to make with Firefox as the commands are right above one another (Copy Link Location vs Copy Image Location), that's all

As I expected I did not win. I was very surprised to learn that I went in the right direction, especially as I started out with a completely different style (did 3 entries but only finished the last one.)
I really wanted to win a sub so I guess it will have to be next time. The main thing is I learned a lot. Even down to trying to get a decent image digitized. I just revived some old Rapidographs so I won't be using "cheap" pens anymore, even if my ink is like 15 years old haha.

Thanks for your comment. I quit doing this stuff years ago (all my gallery stuff like this is old.) For one thing, you don't just wave this kind of art around my town. So pretty much only my closest friends ever saw it. It's really refreshing to realize that there are more of us out here! And to have so many sources to draw inspiration and technique from.. I'm home!

Yeah, I was trying to be spontaneous. I never intended to have our ancestry represented by some kind of dinosaur chicken but I'll be damned, he just popped right out there.

Woah, so many things happening all at once! Nifty.
Looks almost like a combination of species into one. The eyeball inside the mouth of a one-eyed skull was really sweet. I also like your smooth transition from one item into another, very nice.
Good luck at the contest.
