Modesty Blaise artwork for an upcoming issue of the Swedish comic book magazine 'Agent X-9', who were generous enough to let me post this early as a tribute to Modesty's creator, Peter O'Donnel, who passed away on the 3rd of May, aged 90.Pencil sketch on paper, painted in photoshop.

Thanks! Modesty Blaise is a character that appeared in a British newspaper strip starting in the late 60's - kind of a female James Bond, but much cooler if you ask me

Sweet! Actually the art director asked me to base my painting somewhat on one of the panels from that particular story.... so that would make it art based on art imitating art imitating art...

Big Modesty fan myself! The Princess looks good. I think Willie could be a little rougher looking, a little more early Michael Caine, but overall, excellent!

Thanks man! Always nice to run into a fellow Modesty fan. You are probably right about Willie - a young Michael Caine's name often pops up in discussion on who should play him in a movie, and I remember reading his name in an interview with Peter O'Donnel, so I probably shouldn't argue with him

Have you seen the film "My Name is Modesty" it's not bad and the DVD also has a great interview with O'Donnell as well as one with Quentin Tarantino. I think he produced the film as a baby step toward a major Modesty movie, which of course, has never happened.
I reread the novels every few years. I like them better than the comic strips even though the strips are excellent.

I do know the movie - have a copy on DVD in fact. Such a pity the full on modesty movie seems to have died before it got started - 'My Name is Modesty' is fine, particularly seeing how quickly it was put together, but I would love to see one done with enough time, budget and an extensive casting net.
I'm with you on the books - I discovered them when I was a lad and didn't even know about the comics until years later. While I do enjoy the comic strips, its always been the novels for me too.

I recently 'discovered' Modesty Blaise. I love their faces, realistic and expressive. Also, her hands are beautifully rendered. This is a fabulous book cover!

Great painting there. I'm a big fan of the books, but didn't know Peter O'Donnel had died. He left a great legacy in his books though.
Is it me, or have you made Willie look like a young James Coburn? hehehehe

His passing was sad, but yes, he did leave a great legacy. Good eyes on the James Coburn - I did add a bit of James to my depiction of Willie - always felt Willie had a bit of that weathered toughness to him

Funny you should mention Willie having a weathered toughness about him. I used to belong to a Yahoo group devoted to Modesty Blaise and there was a thread, of sorts, devoted to who would be your wish list choice for the roles of the characters IF a film were ever made. I didn't submit my choice but they were:
Daniel Craig as Willie Garvin (this was before he got the role of James Bond)
Robert Hardy for the role of Tarrant
David Jason for the role of Fraser
Edward Norton for Stephen Collier
Meg Ryan for Dinah
Bruce Spence for Giles PennyFeather (at least as he was back in the early 80's)
I never did pin down the actress to play Modesty. Too big a role to fill, and the Tarrantino produced film was OK but the actress was a bit too limp. Not a bad film though.
One of my choices was Demi Moore, so long as she could be trusted to follow the script and the character persona and not branch out with her own interpretation and balls it up. Which given the current stock of Hollywood actors they'd have a tantrum and try to do just that.
Anyway thought you might find my choices of some interest.

Cool! Some interesting and laudable actor slections there! Probably not the right age now but I always felt that Claudie Black (she of Farscape fame) certainly could carry the kick-ass aspect of being Modesty. Andrea Parker was another one who I imagined could handle the role - really important that whoever played her came across as intelligent and lethal - the action in the recent Tarrantino produced film was far from convincing (still enjoyed it - at this stage I'll take any modesty stuff I can get!
Anyway, its a fun game to play and I do hope they do a movie that does the character justice one day!
