Description In my galaxy of aliens and spacers, I figure there has to be an easy way to communicate between the hundreds of different races.

Here is a small creature called the Language Eater from Daramia.

It attached itself inside the auditory canal of a being and devours vocal sound waves. It then poops out the translation of the host's native language.

Effective little booger eh?

(C) me

PS Since posting this I have had it pointed out that this idea is very similar to the Babel fish from Hitchiker's Guide!!! ARGH.

Well, at least mine poops the translation into your head instead of translating brain waves!

This is an original idea if there ever was one. I hate how Star Trek never bothered to explain how the universal translator worked or why the aliens were forming English words with their lips. This is awesome.

I really appreciate that, my friend!Β  I was worried, once I drew this, someone noted the Hitchhiker's Guide Babel Fish and I slapped my forehead for not researching beforehand!!!Β  I just recently saw the ingestible language understanding device on Legends of the DCU as well.Β

'Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of theΒ non-existence of God.
'The argument goes something like this: "I refuse to prove I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
' "But," says Man, "theΒ Daramian language-eaterΒ is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."
' "Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
' "Oh, that was easy," says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.
'Most leading theologians claim that this argument is a load of dingo's kidneys, but that didn't stop Khraan Chahergha making a small fortune when he used it as the central theme of his best-selling book,Β Well That About Wraps It Up for God.
'Meanwhile, the poor Daramian language-eater, by effectively removing all barriers to communication between different races and cultures, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation.'

Now thatΒ΄s a creative idea XD
Sounds almost like a creation of Terry Pratchett.
And yes, thatΒ΄s one effective little booger!

But I bet it itches... and how does it reproduce? O.O And what happens, when it reproduces?!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lordwormm In reply to Nekromantenhase [2011-03-25 18:35:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I thought it was original, but Hitchikers' guide has a fish that does the same thing. You know, I have them coming from Daramia, where the scientists collect them and give them freely to all civilizations. I would think the only pre-requisite would be to make sure you get either a neutered one or a male or a female that has no way of getting pregnant, otherwise, you might be in trouble!

Nekromantenhase In reply to Lordwormm [2011-03-25 20:30:28 +0000 UTC]

A friend of mine would so like the idea of some kind of ear-fish getting pregnant inside someone... she likes creepy stuff.
Would you like to now what her suggested strategy was to deal with a ghost-hand coming out of a toilet? (didnΒ΄t make that up, itΒ΄s part of japanese folklore)
I quote:
"Well, first du hold the hand, bite it and try to tear as much flesh away as possible, until the bone shows up. Then you kick the bone until it breaks."
Poor ghost D:

Lordwormm In reply to Bug-Off [2011-03-25 19:11:50 +0000 UTC]

You are right. It's been on my to-read list for a while, along with the DUNE books. I have trouble enough getting time to read Star Wars books or Clive Barker books that I actually own! I have seen the BBC version and the movie, but dammit, it still bugs me.

I did read up on the Babel fish, glad to know that is uses telepathic modes, I went with sound waves instead of brain waves. And mine poops translations into your brain, so that makes me feel a bit less of a hack!
