Horse anatomy is one of the hardest of the animal anatomies... their lean and muscular forms are all about the subtle change of shadow and tone to create a convincing effect of the strong bodies that stand under their shining coats. The oblong faces and strange postures of many horses also make it hard for the artist to capture believably.

I think this piece does very well with both shading and posture. The proportions are a tad off, and I think the place where the horse's body cuts off the end of the page breaks the illusion of perspective, making the body look stunted and the head too large. The chest muscles are very nicely defined, but the side of the horse looks a bit flat, and the dark shadow near the hindquarters looks more like a crease that confuses the eye and disturbs some of the three dimensionality.

That said, the light here plays beautifully. Subtle light reflections and a variety of different shadow colors bring the white of the horse's coat to life. The browns and purples do wonders for the richness and reality of the horse, and the white steed is nicely juxtaposed with the background. The plain background allows the eye to really explore the complex shading of the horse's body.

Overall this is a beautiful piece, and the proportional flaws are dwarfed by the rich colors. White is a difficult color to paint realistically, and I am blown away by the display of color theory here. Nice work.

Really nice piece of work!!

But i think the face needs to be longer, and the eyes need to be a wee bit farther down and ever so slightly closer together.

You did a fantastic job on the body and ears though!
Horses are tough to draw and paint! (:
