Description

July 2017

Sometimes all you want to do is put everything aside and just have a quiet day for yourself (and your companion).

________________________________________________

This one has been in the making for better part of two plus years and gone from exciting to pain in the butt to exciting again a few times over. The bonedog came about really quickly (although not originally intended for this particular painting), and the lady was also finished quite speedily last year. As always it’s the background that gives me the troubles. It was drawn, re-drawn, tweaked and edited, and then re-drawn again until I found something that would work. And trust me – the early versions were horrendous, the perspective didn’t work at all. I think I spent a year just working on the background sketches, at the very least. And lastly, the other day, after tidiying away all the sketches and drafts the final count stopped at ten background versions. Ten I tell you! TEN!!!

Size was also a bit of an issue this time. Considering all things I wanted to have in the image and the minimum size things needed to be to show an acceptable result I decided to gamble and choose a fairly large format. End result is way bigger than an A3 - which is a first for my watercolours.

I dedicate this one to who was the very first to suggest temple location with bonedogs made in watercolours. It took more than three and a half years to get there, even though the temple location ended up in a garden, but I knew I’d eventually find the right(ish) idea to incorporate that challenge.

Ponderous note: Not sure whether lilacs really grow in this imaginary world but there was a need to add the odd splash of colour amongst the greens.  Besides… lilacs happen to be one of my favourites.

Material: Watercolour, a tiny bit of acrylic and a minute use of coloured pencils.
Size: 53x33 cm (21x13 in) Somewhere between an A3 and A2
Time: Oh so many hours! I spent at least 50 hours – roughly – just sketching (traditionally and digitally) and working out the background. The main job of jotting down the lineart and doing the actual painting took about just as much: 50 hours. In total about 100 hours and roughly 30 workdays.

I’ve been monitoring the time spent drawings and painting since 2011 and as a comparison “Lady with a bonedog” from 2014 took about 40 hours in total from sketch to signing, and the other year I made a commissioned piece (not posted online) which took about 49 hours in total. This is without doubt the most massive watercolour project to date.

Thank you.
It's my biggest watercolour to date. A personal favourite still (even if it was a pain in the butt to complete sometimes).

Here it is then. Despite all that pain in the butt and grit teeft and pens and pencils flying to the wall and you swearing in the name of all possible gods and little devils that you will never EVER do backgrounds again. ...

But the outcome is worth of all the sweat and trouble and I bet that you are now very pleased that you originally started this project. I know that you are. I know from my own experience with those B5 spaceship scale models I made from the scratch back then. I can even relate to you with the used time as my longest project took 2,5 years. These projects took a huge amount of our lives Louise but you could spent your life with much worse deeds than making art, be it drawing, painting or scale modeling.

And how those earlier versions might have looked I dare to say that the backgound perspective works in this one and I don't have anything critical to say about the figures of the woman and bonedog either. In fact I very much like the relaxed and natural looking pose which the woman has in this. And your use of colors pleases eyes too. Those different tones of green plants,  waterways and -falls, terraces and stone slabs create quite good feeling of a temple (or sort of a botanical amphitheatre) garden.

Hmm, what might she have in her basket? Some beverages and snacks perhaps. And a good book to read. What more could you ask?

Well... I might have cursed the entire project once or fifty times but honestly... I'm not that clever. There will be BG's, and I will go through the whole ordeal again. And again. But just not now. The upcoming drawings are blissfully free of backgrounds. Then we'll see.

And of course I am very very pleased The result is fantastic! Currently it has center stage on the wall where I put all my finished pieces. (All the toil already forgotten)

Yeah... the previous versions... I guess the garden-idea was there from the beginning but the expression of that idea evolved quite a bit. And thankfully so. Way too many straight lines, that was the problem. Several of the versions were too full of horizons and and many straight lines. It was too organised I suppose. My goodness, those sketches won't be missed at all.

Botanical amphiteathre garden... Not a bad expression. I Like it. When I got there in the process I was doing plenty of searches on "palace gardens". I was also thinking of the hanging gardens of Babylon, and trying to make a personal stab at it. And keeping in mind the whole really-big-things-that-are-far-away feeling that had to correspond neatly with the foregound stuff. I think I got there eventually, once some ugly stuff got thrown out the window.

What more can you ask for? Indeed. But I think there must be some more random items in the bottom of that basket because the other items wouldn't be sticking up as high otherwise. Some things to eat, some drink, a book or two, somewhere nice to be and a friend... The epitome of a nice day to yourself (in this world).

Thanks, Panu

Yes, backgrounds can not be completely avoided, ignored or dropped out. But sometimes it feels like it should be possible for the sake of our patience (and sanity).  Hehe!

It seems to me that your decision to move from straight lines to more round shapes was a good one. There can be gardens which are formed as neatly and geometrically as Roman legion squares but more relaxed and "disorganized" arrangement suits this better. And I think that in a whole the view or panorama is now well balanced. Foreground and background included.

This beautiful scene reminds me of a persian verse by Hafez
"Two sweethearts,
Two flasks of old wine,
A book of verse,
And a cosy corner in the garden."

Maybe one sweetheart and one bonedog counts...

I'd say the verse is spot-on in this case.
Haha... One sweethart and one desert ghost counts just as much.

Oh so much time! Next drawing will not have a background - I need a little break from boisterous backgrounds now.
Glad I could amaze you a little. My job is done!
