Hemlock Dustborn had been a welcome part of the bustling town of Westfield all of his life. Not every community would be happy to have a tiefling living among them, but Hemlock was always well liked by his human neighbors.

Although Hemlock wasn't the most social person, he was polite, compassionate and highly intelligent. He also possessed skills that very few others had.

Hemlock was both an herbalist and an alchemist. He could create wonderful potions that could cure almost every illness someone might be suffering from, and he offered them at very reasonable prices. He was even willing to forgo a fee if one of the poorer members of the community was in need. Hemlock couldn't stand to see anyone in pain.

The day that forever changed the young tiefling's life was the day that he first saw her from his window. She was a stranger to town, a beautiful half-elven girl with long dark hair and bright blue eyes. She moved gracefully and smiled often, and as soon as Hemlock laid eyes on her, he felt his heart tremble.

Although he was far too shy to approach her himself, Hemlock found out through his neighbors that her name was Seline, and that she was staying in Westfield for a few weeks to visit her uncle. "You should go and say hello to her!" his neighbors would say, "She's a very nice girl, I'm sure she'd be happy to meet you."

The very idea of exchanging words with Seline made Hemlock blush deeply. The closest he came to talking to her was when he passed her and her uncle in the marketplace. Seline looked at his horns curiously and smiled at him, offering a polite nod of her head.

Meeting her eyes even for that brief moment took the tiefling's breath away and he was unable to move. Long before he was able to collect his thoughts, Seline and her uncle had already continued on their way and Hemlock was left cursing himself for his lack of response.

That night, in his tower, he began to formulate a plan. He would go an introduce himself to Seline - but not until he was sure he could be worthy of her attention.

Over the next few days Hemlock created a healing balm to clear any blemishes or imperfections from his skin. He blended together a light oil to comb through his hair to make it silkier and shinier. He trimmed his claws down to the size and shape of regular human fingernails, and he rubbed a special paste into his teeth to make them perfectly white.

But his horns... what could he do about his horns? A woman of elven heritage like Seline was sure to come from a traditional and noble family. Surely she could never be bonded together in love with a man with obvious horns on his head.

Hemlock became determined to rid himself of his tiefling features. He knew from a past attempt that his horns were to sturdy to be sawn off. But perhaps... perhaps he could find a way to rid himself of the horns with a chemical elixir?

Over the next week, Hemlock buried himself in his work. He made attempt after attempt, drinking all manner of strange concoctions and taking note of their affects on his body.

After nearly ten days of strange experimentation, Hemlock found himself weak and ill. Thinking that perhaps a walk in the fresh air would make him feel better again, he spent some time in the market, exchanging pleasantries with his neighbors and friends.

During this time, he overheard a local fisherman speaking of the lovely Seline, and how she would be returning home the day after tomorrow.

Shocked at how much time had passed during his brewing, Hemlock fled the market and returned to his home, more desperate than ever to succeed in his experiments. He was sure all he needed was something stronger and more potent.

Sadly, Hemlock's next potion was his last. After choking on a combination of ingredients that proved lethal, the tiefling's listless spirit hovered over his body until a deep voice drew his attention.

"This way, Alchemist." The Horned Man commanded. "You've been working very hard. It's time for you to rest now."

Hemlock hesitated for only a moment before accepting his fate. He would never be able to see Seline's smile again.

In death, Hemlock still suffers from shame in regards to his tiefling features. He has grown his hair long and attempts to brush it in a way that covers most of his horns. He finds it difficult to ever accept any compliments in regards to his own appearance.

However, time has allowed him to make peace with his feelings of loss in regards to his unrequited love. Hemlock no longer feels as shy or lonely as he once did, and finds it easy to socialize with other Reapers and the human spirits he helps guide to the world beyond.

Hemlock gets along very well with the Scribes Lore and Dirge, who are very appreciative of Hemlock's extensive knowledge of alchemy. He also enjoys being around his fellow Guides Jinx and Salem , as they share his gentle personality.

His closest friend is his partner Rictus , who he looks after like an older brother. Rictus enjoys napping with his head resting on Hemlock's lap, and Hemlock is always glad to tell Rictus stories of his mortal life back in Westfield.

Hemlock is unique amongst the Reapers in the way that he is the only one to have died by taking his own life. However, he is quick to remind anyone who asks that his suicide was completely accidental. He is strongly against any form of intentional self-harm and is deeply saddened when he encounters a human soul who has chosen to die needlessly.

Hemlock detests violence and only engages into battle when absolutely necessary, preferring to leave such encounters in the hands of his capable Slayer partner Rictus.
