Tofu is the himi of these two, Sushi has the colored siamese butt, I love it! They're so beautiful, I don't know how the 'owner' could cast them aside.

Wow breed animals . Cute names :3
Mine were advertised as snake food, too. I have a husky and Fancy rat.

Aww, I want a husky! I wish they were in Canada. There's so many varieties that are just out of reach for us, they're really hard to find. I had to cross the border for a non-petstore hairless rat. I've seen hairless and dwarves at the rat shows here though!

Oh to bad
There were so many other huskyrats where I bought him.
And if no one buies them they end up as snake food.
If I had enough space for them I would buy them all.

Are all of your rats female?
Or are yours castrated?

Heh, Hazel and Onyx are neutered and live with the girls; Eight, Eva, Sydney, Cricket and soon to be Tofu, Sushi, Fishsticks, and my new little baby Bug. Then I have a group of intact males; Leo, Theo, Cleo who live in a separate cage. The girls get the cn162 and the boys get the fn142

So all in all that's 13 ratties! And a lot of mess!!

Oh wow O.O
When I got mine you couldnΒ΄t see what sex they are.
Soon I have to seperate them. I allready payed a high bill because they had mite infestation from the pet store. To pay 60euros for an castration is to high for me at the moment.

Or maybe IΒ΄ll wait for their first babys and then seperate male and female.
I have a big terrarium for them and to buy another one would be more expensive than the castration.
And it would mean even less space in my living room, for me and my boyfriend.

Oh man. Really complicated. They love each other and I donΒ΄t want to disassociate them from each other.

Maybe IΒ΄ll find a bag full of money.

*bothersome me*

You have males and females living together? You should separate them ASAP in that case, as females can have small litters and barely show, then have their litter, and become pregnant right after if the male is present! That's EXTREMELY unhealthy for the female and can even kill her to be lactating and carrying at the same time. Even a temporary house like a hamster cage would be better than risking her life.

Rats will be fine if you separate them temporarily, especially if the female is pregnant, she won't appreciate a nosy male around and may even act aggressively to him. Just make sure to either keep a male and a female baby for their future companions or fix one of them when you get the money. You could charge a small ($5-10) adoption fee in order to raise money for the surgery. If you get the male neutered, make sure to wait 5 or 6 weeks for his sperm to die! Hazel impregnated Eva 4.5 weeks after his surgery!

The vet says he is not fully mature yet.
Since he survives the castration only 50%, I'll probably separate them and buy everyone a new partner. Then I will buy rats which gender is already known.

Thank you for your tips!

Have you checked local rat resuces, shelters, and craigslist? Those are much better places to get rats as it gives them second chances and helps the pet overpopulation problem. Buying feeder rats sadly contributes to the problem because rats in shelters that could have gotten homes don't.

Yeah I wanted to get them in animal shelter. But they had no rats.
All of my animals are from animal shelter, excluding my rats.

Aww how cute! I have a russian blue siamese boy <3.

What does the third ratty look like?

She's a russian fawn hooded with a wheely tail! Very cute but not as photogenic as these two.

I never adopt from the 'Pet' cages at per stores, i always ask to go into the back and pick out my new additions from the feeder rat bins.

You can find some of the most beautiful babies back there!

That's not actually a great thing to do when countless rats are in shelters and rescues, it's just as bad as buying from the pet bin in terms of rat overpopulation! I got these guys off craigslist where they were advertised as biting, aggressive rats for free. I knew their chances were slim to go to a pet home when advertised as "free, I don't care where they go"

Awww, such wonderful critters.
They're more worth than just snake food.

What a shame that living rats are beind sold as this.

Luna-Ortis In reply to Duzloo [2010-02-08 22:26:58 +0000 UTC]

They were actually free, which is why I was so fast to scoop them up. I knew their chances of going to a pet home on a busy craigslist for free were very slim. My friend picked them up while she was in the next town, so she got to name the third one fishsticks! Lol.

They're apparently "problem rats" with biting and attacking each other, but they just boggled and cuddled while I took photos of them and gave them scritches They really loved it!

I guess they'll soon become friendly. Maybe it's because of how they've been treaten earlier? I don't know but it's nice of you to give them a peaceful home. Those sweet critters deserve it!
I love white rats. They're beautiful

Yeah, they bit her kid who was young. I can even pull them out of hammocks without getting bitten, I just have to respect their space, it's not like they're vicious or anything!

I think they'll only need time. Maybe it helps if you're making the same noise everytime before you try to touch them... Anyways, good luck!
