You catch the zany convoluted nature of the series quite well, and trust a Brit to catch a British art aesthetic perfectly.

Thank you...when they invited me to submit a sample page, I borrowed the series on VHS from a friend, and immersed myself in if for several days, so my ear was attuned ti the speech patterns. This could really have done with a lot more polish, but, looking at it more than 20 years later, I don't think it's too bad.

Well, for me the characterisation is good, but you appear to have written yourself into a corner by melting Starbug.

Well, it was really just a test page to show them that I could probably draw the characters. I don't exactly remember where I was going with the melting Starbug, but I think I had something in my head about the planet being inhabited by beings who could scramble molecules, and unscramble them...there was probably going to be some business about masticated food being reconstituted, so that Lister would have a never-ending cheeseburger.

I've always enjoyed that show, one of the few examples of science fiction and comedy actually working. I think you captured the spirit of the show well here.

It was broader than Hitch-Hiker's guide, the only other good example I can think of, but it worked really well. The inspiration may have been Dark Star. I really think it picked up in the second season, and the special effects guys had great fun - it was on when they'd scrapped Doctor Who, and for my money, it was more than a substitute for that show, which had grown rather dreary. It was a mistake to remix some of the episodes with CGI effects and an attempt at a 'filmy' texture, and the final series wasn't worth bothering with - but when it was good, it was really good! It would have been fun to draw a strip.

Red Dwarf was better when it had that filmed before a live audience feel and the model special effects rather than CGI. Sometimes I think it would have been better if the show had the beginning, middle, and end formula. I get the feeling the producers were just trying to get as much mileage out of it as possible and they were running out of things to do. I would have had an older, wiser Lister who's now a grandfather watching wistfully in the distance as younger Lister signs up for the Space Corps.
"You smeghead," he says with a smirk.
And I agree that Doctor Who got depressing after Peter Davison was brought to the role, but I don't think it's his fault. For some weird reason, a director or somebody thought he couldn't do comedy, but Davison does that very well.

Yeah, they were kind of flogging a dead horse toward the end, so i stopped watching. I agree the model work was beautiful - they used to shoot those sequences on 35mm film - I know they switched to 16mm later, but it was still better than CGI. Re: Doctor Who - I had no real problem with Peter Davison - for me, it showed that the series was about ideas and pace, and it didn't matter of the Doctor was played by a bland young fellow. I do remember he had some hot companions - Tegan, Nyssa, and at some point, Peri (hard to forget the bikini scene! Yippee!)...and I like Colin Baker, too. He had a madness about him that I enjoyed. Then they pulled the plug on it, and weird things happened...some guy called Sylvester McCoy came along...I'd grown tired of it all by then...this was the late eighties, and Red Dwarf was a refreshing change!

Thank you - I must say, I thought so. Nothing came of this, though.

Lister was a sort of hero, because of his gleeful intake of horrible food. And I was in my thirties when it was on!

I just admired his cavalier disregard for good taste or food hygiene.
