"There was once a poor widow who lived in a lonely cottage. In front of the cottage was a garden wherein stood two rose trees, one of which bore white and the other red roses. She had two children who were like the two rose trees, and one was called Snow-white, and the other Rose-red."
...

"The two children were so fond of each other that they always held each other by the hand when they went out together, and when Snow-white said, "We will not leave each other," Rose-red answered, "Never so long as we live,"...

This entry was made for the #JustATouchOfColor Contest ending soon.

I have the Grimms Complete Fairy Tales published by the Fall River Press that you can pickup at Barnes and Noble. I have been reading the book on and off and thought illustrating the Snow-White and Rose-Red characters in the the Grimms story would be a fun challenge.

This picture was more of a challenge since I tried to add just a touch of color. Hopefully this qualifies for the Contest. ^^*

I always thought this was a very cute story. I know that this is a different Snow White than the one most people know (it's even spelled differently in German, I think), but this combined with Snow White served as the basis for a novel I'm writing, and it actually works pretty well (though I'll admit it really more "Snow White... with a sister" than SW and RR, lol). Not sure why, but my vision of Rose Red was a brunette, which no one ever seems to think of her as, and Snow White had black hair. I've seen a lot of SW/RR drawings before, and they usually come in on of a few hair color options: if Snow White has black hair, Rose Red will be a redhead, but if Snow White is blonde then Rose Red can either have red or black/very dark brown hair. I do really like your drawing, it's modern yet traditional, and I like how you drew the sisters to look alike but not identical. Snow White is unique in that it looks like her hair is "snow white!" Great job!

Thank you!

I can see how you would think of brunette since some red roses can be such a deep red that it's a dark color.

I always wondered why Snow White would be portrayed as having black hair. :/

I was reading Fables and I had no idea about Rose Red and Snow White being sisters in one of the stories. Then I read the Grimm's version.

Very interesting.

Good luck on your novel!

Snow White and Cinderella were my favorites, story wise, and Sleeping Beauty was my favorite, art wise.

We're talking Disney right? 0_o Silly question maybe,^-^, but just checking since there are sooo many renditions of all three.

Yep, good ol' 1970's and early 80's Disney. *happy sigh*

Got to love the Classics. Surprisingly, Snow White was (maybe is) my least fav of the Classics, but I have not seen it in a long time. Still like the Cinderella.
