Great idea! It's interesting and pretty!

Can you tell me something about polymer clay?
I have only heard about polymer resin.
Is the polymer clay less complicated than the polymer resin or is it the same thing?

I will be grateful for the answer!

Polyresin and polymer clay are two completely different things. Many figurines and picture frames, among other things, are cast in polyresin. Now I don't know enough about it to really say, but I don't believe it is cured by heating. I think two substances are mixed together and it hardens on its own in a matter of hours or days. (but don't quote me on that )
Polymer clay is polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in a plasticizer which gives it the malleable clay texture. Polymer clay is hardened (cured) at temps between 230 and 275 degrees Fahrenheit. I am only familiar with polymer clay so I can't tell you which is less complicated but my money is on polymer clay.
That about exhausts everything I know about the two LOL! I hope it answered your questions.

Thank you for the answer!

So polymer clay isn't very expensive?
I am looking for a good sculptural stuff.
Can you recommend me something concrete?

As I understand, polymer clay need to be hardened by baking, so my another question is what with things, which you put inside, for example watch or glaze?

You're welcome I think polymer clay is relatively inexpensive but it probably depends on where you live and your income. Anyhoo...check out my latest journal. I am asking for advice from other artists about something I recently discovered. It is called Apoxie Sculpt and, from the images I found by searching on the web, it is very good for sculptural creations. I have never used it, but found the responses to my journal very helpful!

Polymer clay does need to be hardened with heat but the temperature is low enough that metal, glass, stones, wood and even paper have not been harmed. Of course the watches I use are not working watches and even if they were, they are buried in clay LOL! I apply the glazes and paints (if any) after the piece is cured.

Hope this helps!

fantastic. Im just starting with polymer and would love to know how you created the dragon skin texture

MandarinMoon In reply to Tahirbrown [2009-07-14 10:34:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! Some of the 'scales' are etched into the raw clay by hand. For others, I took the handle off of a watercolor brush and shaped the open end of the ferrule to a more 'scalelike' shape and pressed that into the clay. You can use anything to texture the clay. It's fun to experiment!
I love your Aztec box and Dragon clock and I can't wait to see what you create with polymer clay!

Thanks! I was really happy with the way it turned out. The hands acted as the pupil and when the light hit it at certain angles it glowed.

I could definitely see something like this in a fantasy movie. All of the little tiny 'filaments' between the scales look really interesting.
