It looks like a Melancholy Machine to me; an entity that can disempower others to make them feel miserable before consuming them in their heightened emotional state; a way of tenderizing the meal so as to further enjoy it. As it breeds misery, the misery it ingests becomes a part of it, adding to its strength and power.
Just my two cents. I utterly, utterly love it!
