Really spooky! I think the eeriest part of this picture is that the doll has more defined facial features than the actual human does. Kind of gives Cynthia a somewhat sociopathic feel of missing humanity and also in a way implies that the doll is seemingly a character with feelings, possibly moreso than its owner. Which makes this picture all the more scary because that gives the feeling that this child isn't just releasing her lust for violence on an inanimate object. Really, she reminds me of Sid in Toy Story, though I think Sid had more of a range of emotions than Cynthia seems to. Something tells me if that doll demanded Cynthia to stop, she'd just keep that blank, featureless expression, showing no fear.
Really great work with the background, the old-style house contributes really well to the spook factor. I think your style really works well here because the thick strokes kind of give the house an extra antique-y look which adds to the creepy ancient house vibe. With the empty, solemn-looking rocking chair and overturned, sheet-covered dresser/wardrobe, the look of the house kind of implies that the house is abandoned, adding an extra ominous feeling to the piece. One kind of gets the sense Cynthia is all alone, her isolation and possible contempt at abandonment slowly converting to antisocial/apathetic thoughts and a disintegrating sense of spirit. And of course, the scariest of scary things are the ones you can pity - that kind brings a double fear of both the frightening idea of being the frightening thing itself, or being their victim. I must say, I would not want to be in the situation of Cynthia or her doll.
Very thought provoking for such a simple piece. I really do enjoy some eerie art, and this really does it. Nice work on this!Β
