I've never heard of a grasshopper shedding its skin. Is it only this certain genus that does such a thing? How very interesting!

every insect has to shedding its skin when they are growing. the have no "soft" skin like mammals. so when they are growing they have to renew their "shield".

walking slowly through the meadow and always looking down. of course i had luck to find these grashopper right in this position

you must have pretty long lens
very good sharpness and also you must be very patient to take so good shots

not really. i used a sigma 105mm macro lens and found this scene just before sunrise.
i must offer that i had very very much luck
