Perhaps SEGA used the equals sign to point out how the characters' last name should represents their unique personality. Or maybe they have some sort of math campaign for arcade games back then? Hmm... Creative spelling indeed.

Math! That's got it be it! It also explains the irregular heights and weights listed at the end of the Genesis version. They're equations! Well.. I guess it's just like the FBI warning at the beginning of every US arcade game through out the 80's says:
