I heard somewhere that Makoto Shinkai also use this kind of technique,
How long did it take to finish it?
And which one do you prefer, paint over photo or manual?

Yes, he use this method because his team was small (not like now). That where I learn about this method
I was doing it slowly over the afternoon until night while watching video / playing games.
For people that doesnt understand perspective drawing, this method is better

I think in this method the results always seem more natural looking then when using 3D models for a 2D rendering paintover.
But I don't understand much about it, so that would be just my opinion as a viewer and not as a digital painter.
