Yes cats are smart. Had one a few years back that not only learned how to open doors to forbidden spaces; but to also close them afterwards so we would not know that he gone into "no cat's land".

Shelly can open doors too given the chance. We had to put a hook and eye on the utility room door to keep her from pulling it open.

My cat can open doors too,but her way to let me know when she wants something to eat (and that happens no less than five or six times a day) is to waul as loud as she can...

LOL! Shelly jumps up on the table next to my work station and just reaches over and taps me on the shoulder- then she sits there and stares at me!

That's one thing I can say for Shelly. She is gentle. I'll never forget when I went to the shelter to pick one out. Of all the cats there that day, she was the only one reaching out through the bars of her cage to the people- all the other cats were cowering in the back of the cages. When I saw that, I knew which cat I wanted.

She is a very smart but also very kind and gentle cat,something I can't say for my older one...
