Description
"I am your equal," said the cow
Whose neck was placed under the knife
"My life is so very similar to yours,
We suffer in just one kind of strife"

"I know we know no kinship,
And through partings of the past
Of character and of intellect
You now consider me last

"But hear me on one subject,
Such that you might relate
No matter who we are on Earth,
We fear a violent fate

"For what if you were under knife,
Placed so harshly in a grip
Meant to steal life's fading breaths
And send you on a one-way trip

"What if I had your child here
In a grip much like how you have mine
And caged her all alone inside
And called her lowly as the swine

The cow, she wriggled on the floor
Fear tainted in her eyes as she
Could take her shaky breaths no more
Whose soul from her body began to flee

Movements stilling like fired glass
Broken soul floats up and away
Neatly rendered still beneath you
Hoping for a peaceful day

Why must we do this, over and over?
Call it necessary, justice, sport
When the abundance of plants upon our Earth
Renders it nothing of the sort

I could not call this planet home
Until I came to realize
That compassion does not always reflect
Behind my beloved companions' eyes

And so I weep for all those fallen
Beneath the hands of the mighty and strong
And pray for a distant, utopian day
When, perhaps, we can all get along
