Name: Justin Tan
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Digivice: His digital watch.
Digital Shard: Courage
Height: 5 feet 4 inches
Nationality: Singaporean
Personality: Justin often keeps to himself, and keeps quiet. Not because he's necessarily 'shy' as such - though that is the functional result - but because he finds it far less bothersome to have to figure out who to interact with, and how to do so, if he instead decides 'not at all'. If somehow coaxed into a conversation, or given reason to seek one out, he can prove sociable enough, though rarely maintaining proper eye contact, while gesticulating along with his words, more than a few times missing basic social cues. However, he can also prove surprisingly insightful on the underlying implications of a person's words, if he recognises the patterns in their speech. He can be a little touchy about avoiding offense, a habit developed in reaction to a need to minimise giving bullies any seeming provocation for their behaviour; maybe didn't help much, but the mannerisms as a result remain. His ultimate desire is to be friendly, but he is utterly averse to presuming, often leaving himself in something of a catch-22.
While having a great preference towards the over the top and exaggerated in his entertainment - his favourite series, Blazing Fighter Solaiger, was hardly a subtle show - Justin himself can be something of a minimalist, usually trying to get by with as little as possible. He's used 'disposable' tools as long term equipment, wears almost nothing but secondhand clothing, and will rarely if ever actually ask for anything, instead waiting until he is already able to obtain something for himself - which hasn't generally been common, given his circumstances. Similarly, while he has various wants and desires - indeed, he has something of an overwhelming interesting in modern media and technology - he is rarely able to act on them, and so has become accustomed to either being cautious about seizing upon opportunity, or simply turning them down out of habit. To a certain extent, he has come to use Coronamon as a crutch, letting his little friend's more outward going personality, and general curiosity for life as a means of exercising his own, often unfulfilled dreams.
It can thus be a surprise then that one area in which Justin rarely falters - though his success rate is somewhat questionable - is in seeking to help others. Part of it is simply the necessity of a household where a spare set of hands was commonly needed ingraining itself as a behaviour, and part of it is taking the lessons of his childhood favourites to heart. Justin seeks to emulate the kind heart of Solaiger, and in moments of dire need, will emulate the fictional hero's determination as well. Indeed, when Justin finds himself requiring the hero's bravery, he will often mimic their mannerisms outright, burying his own doubts and uncertainties beneath cliché - and confusing, without context - speeches about the light of the sun shining down upon evil, completely with over the top posing and loud bravado. It is unclear to what extent such displays are genuine, and to what extent they are merely performances, but they have gotten Justin to do things that he perhaps otherwise may not have. Coronamon seems to enjoy them at least, which is a perk; his partner's entertainment can be a useful motivator when Justin needs to do something silly.
History: It began, as these things so often do, with an egg.
Well, there was a time before the egg as well; roughly two-thirds of life for young Justin, who had only lived twelve years up until that point. A young lad growing up poor in Singapore, he didn't exactly have personal access to much of the luxury that otherwise pervaded his surroundings; at least not at times when it was actually contemporary. What pleasures he enjoyed in his use were those that could be found for dirt cheap, and had every ounce of usage wrung out of them. Fleeting fads like trading cards and collectables rarely drew his attention, and he often shunned the latest releases on the latest consoles, vs one well built video game he could play ad-infinitum without paying a cent more than the five or ten dollars he paid at the local secondhand shop. His uniforms - really, his clothes in general - were hand-me-downs from older siblings, and one of his chief motivations for avoiding weight gain was the risk posed by growing beyond any size his brothers had ever held. While the rest of the world moved onto DVDs, Blu-Ray, and whatever else, Justin happily watched the same old VHS tapes, with half a series' worth of material. And if the VCR had to break, well then he had to fix it, even if initially with the help of his father. In general, he had to make the most of things, learning to appreciate what relative fortune came his way.
Such fortune tended to be lacking at school however. While early years had seen little distinction between Justin and his peers, being children entertained by the simplest of things, the older they became, the further they drifted apart, and became more readily aware in differences of standing. Observations of what little he had - and how tightly he clung to it, seeming obsessive to outsiders - would eventually evolve into derision and scorn, only serving to drive him further towards (affordable) interests and hobbies that did not necessitate interaction with others of his own age. The moment the final bell rang, he would not hang around for friends he did not have, or even head out into the city to explore and experience life; he simply retreated home to familiar comforts, and sheltered himself in them. By that tender age of twelve, Justin had become an effective shut-in, too easily satisfied with what little he had, to the point he might well have been prepared to just let the world be that thing beyond his window, never to be traversed unless absolutely necessary.
Then, the egg.
Blame for that unusual night can be placed primarily at the feet of Justin's uncle, who by the stroke of good fortune had come into a new laptop, and so decided to pass his old one onto the youngest of his nephews. Eager to gain access to that treasure trove of human knowledge known as 'the internet', Justin was quick to set up his latest piece of equipment, working late into the night to complete the fresh installation, using a disc he'd gotten for cheap at a nearby bazaar. Though in hindsight the odds of it being some pirated copy were fairly obvious, an overly excited and inexperienced Justin had utterly ignored the warning signs, simply happy to see the thing boot into life. It was only as the euphoria faded that he realised that no, the red and yellow ovaline shape was not meant to be, and was not in actuality, a part of his desktop background. No matter what he set for his background, the egg remained, sand in the layers between his background and his icons. lightly bouncing without a care in the world. It didn't seem to impede Justin's ability to actually use the device for his various, intended purposes, so for a long time - about a month really - he tolerated it, twitching it as some benign glitch. Eventually however, his irritation with the visual impact it had on his desktop's layout overwhelmed him, and so Justin sought to resolve this by moving every icon on his desktop to to the edges of the screen, and getting them completely clear of the egg.
It was by no means Justin's intent that this should result in the egg popping from from the screen and plopping into his lap, but that is exactly what happened. Without ceremony or explanation, Justin found himself in possession of an egg the size of a football, and it was moving. Only slightly, shuddering every so often, but the certainty was there in his mind: It was alive, whatever it was. Figuring that, given it was an egg and all, it should be incubated so as to ensure it hatched, Justin quickly erected a nest of sorts from what sheets, towels, and the occasional spare jumper that he could find. Despite his best efforts however, the 'nest' served little to improve the egg's condition; sure it might significantly shudder twice an hour as opposed to once, but by no means did the presumably rather large bird or lizard inside look like it was about to pop forth. Forced to find solutions elsewhere, Justin found himself suddenly having reason to step outside the home after school again, as he went off in search of whatever means might be necessary to bring his... friend? Adopted child? Into the world. It was an ordeal that went on for many months without apparent solution, which would only emerge in the strangest of places. On the day of the Hungry Ghost Festival, he found himself drawn out into the ceremonies, due to the recent passing of his grandmother - the family felt obligated to participate in venerating her so close to her parting. Among the general festivities was a particularly elaborate bit of papier-mache set ablaze, and it was to this that the egg suddenly, and most decidedly was drawn. Placed upon the spot, with the possibility that it was the heat that the egg required, vs the risk of injury to himself should he come so close as to actually situate the egg within the flames...
Justin nevertheless ran forward - to the shock, concern, and anger of onlookers all around - and tossed the backpack in which he held the egg into the inferno. He weathered the accusations of disrespect, focusing only upon the fire and the smoke that rose from it, fearing he had cast out the egg to die. It was only as some of the smoke strangely fell towards him, and coalesced in his fingers into a strange, smokey blob with shining eyes and a gentle smile, that he realised he had done the right thing. Though he did not know the creature's name at the time, Justin insisted on keeping what he would eventually know as Mokumon. That it was a digimon of some kind, he suspected; he had become familiar enough with the general concept of this creatures through the internet, however far they were from his own life. But for the longest time, the creature seemed to be... well, just that: A creature. No more intelligent or capable than a young puppy, really, and Justin was somewhat inclined to treat it as such. Which, well, he did for many years, feeding and loving it as his best - and only - friend, lead along by its desire to explore and to play. After a few of those years, the blob of smoke was replaced by a warm, glowing ball with an open flame - though one 'cool' enough to touch - atop its head. This creature introduced itself as Sunmon, and its prior self as Mokumon. Curiously, despite knowing both of these identities by seeming instinct, Sunmon was blissfully unaware as to what a 'digimon' was. Beyond that, not really much else changed, until very, very recently.
For you see, it was only recently that Sunmon became curious as to his own origins. So as to sate the little one, Justin found what he could about the mysterious realm that was whispered of as 'the digital world'. It was not an easy process sadly; while it was quite clearly known that this digital world existed and had overlapped with the human world for some time now, it was also clearly the subject of much speculation and hearsay, with little to prove one person's word against another. The only reliable institution of any kind seemed to be some place called 'Arcadium', located in Japan - a flight that Justin could by no means afford. Eventually hitting a point where he was willing to try anything to get there, and posting god knows how many messages expressing his desire to do so, Justin returned one afternoon to a most curious email on his laptop. One claiming to provide a means of opening a 'digital gate', permitting passage to the realm that he so desperately sought. Simply exhausted with all his other failed efforts, and with an incorrigible Sunmon hopping excitedly on his shoulder, a beleaguered Justin opened the program, expecting it all to be a load of hogwash.
The fact he then awoke beside at the edge of a vast lake - something which Singapore does not naturally possess - quickly disavowed him of that notion.
Briefly stupefied, if not awed, by the fact he'd set foot in another world, Justin quickly remembered he shouldn't have been alone, though he most decidedly was. Panicking, he search high and low for Sunmon, racing around the shore. Eventually, he spotted a familiar orange blob bobbing up and down beside what looked like a 'forest' of power poles, though upside down and without cables. Just as he would have called out to his friend, Justin spotted something large come rushing through the 'forest' quite suddenly; how he missed the giant, red, anatomically incorrect T-Rex to begin with, he's not quite sure. But it was there, and it tried to make a meal out of his friend. Justin watched from afar as Sunmon cried out for help, apparently unaware that Justin was not too far away. For what felt like the longest time however, Justin didn't get any closer either. A basic fear of an apparent predator - one bigger than any animal he'd ever seen - kept him from stepping forward, afraid for his own life. As the seconds passed however, and Sunmon's screams filled his ears, a shame overtook Justin. The words of his idol rang in his mind...
"A warrior for justice does not abandon the innocent before evil!"
And they soon carried him across, leaping for Sunmon and snatching him away as the larger monster's foot might have crushed them. Clutching his friend tightly, Justin gave a defiant roar!
"If you want him, you'll have to go through me!"
And so set in motion a further series of events he simply could not have predicted. Sunmon, stupefied that his friend would truly go to such lengths, began to shine with a great light; one that dazzled the tyranno into hesitance. A crystal-like protruded from the little digimon's forehead, before disappearing in a streak of light. A light that then struck the watch Justin wore upon his wrist, passed down from a brother. The well worn plastic and cheap metal shifted shape and shone anew, the intensity of the light increasing while Sunmon became enveloped in a similar glow.
"Justin, let me at him!" The little blob insisted, and with no doubt in his mind, Justin obliged. He then watched as his friend began to shift form, just as the watch had.
"Sunmon, digivolve to...!"
From an otherwise featureless mass, a curled fist erupted, wreathed in flame and driven against the great monster's chin in an upper cut. Then another fist emerged, and the two fighting limbs unleashed a rapidfire assault, while legs were still sprouting from the shape. As the tyranno stumbled back, clutching its jaw, a bipedal, decidedly feline shape fell to the floor, a bright orange coat matching the cocky smile it, bathed in the soft glow of gentle flames from both tail and forehead.
"Coronamon!" The digimon declared its new identity, before looking back to its partner, and giving them a triumphant thumbs up.
A perhaps pre-emptive thumbs up.
The tyranno - specifically Tyrannomon, as Justin's 'watch' could now elaborate - was stunned by the sudden assault, sure. But actually beaten by that? Not at all. It shook off the irritation and went for another attack, swiping Coronamon aside like a ragdoll. When the fiery cub got up for a counterattack with its same Corona Knuckle, it was a move that seemingly did little more than sting, and less so than the first time. Swatted aside again, Coronamon went flying into his friend, whi was in turn knocked into the water from catching him. A fairly terrible outcome all told, as the only newly ascended Coronamon was quickly laid low by all the moisture, leaving him to float uselessly in Justin's arms as the Tyrannomon's mouth began to fill with crimson flames...
"DRACO CANNON!"
Only for everything to turn white, as a searing blast stretched from one side of the lake to the other in an instant, crossing just overhead. When the attack faded, all that was left of Tyrannomon was code, drifting away on the wind. After realising the enemy was simply no longer there, Justin turned his head, and on the far side saw a great, winged beast, green and orange in hue. Beside them, a person, that was scooped up in dragon(?)'s hand, quickly taking flight across the lake. They landed where the Tyrannomon had stood, and then, to both Justin's embarrassment and surprised, extended a hand to help him out of the water. While he made an initial effort of reaching the bank without that help, getting up with Coronamon proved a bit much, forcing him to ultimately accept the aid - though there wasn't really much he could do to stop the dragon with a tiger's coat from just picking him up anyway.
The duo introduced themselves; Julian and Dracoslashfeariormon. After an ill advised remark as to the length of the latter's name made Justin aware of just how many teeth they had, the young man was asked as to how exactly he'd gotten himself into such trouble. Explaining his origins seemed to draw suspicion - contrived as they were - yet there was nevertheless an underlying acceptance that they were possible; the digital world was a strange place it seemed, even in its interactions with the human world. Then Julian began an explanation of his own; namely, how much of the digital world was even more dangerous than this, as much as it was filled with wonder and excitement. Justin and his partner had two paths in front of them: Either go home and do their best to forget about this strange place, to never risk the dangers again, or come with Julian, so that they could be given the resources and means to not get eaten within ten minutes of turning up.
Well... probably not hard to guess what option they picked.
Extra Information:
-Almost everything Justin owns is worn to some degree or another. Whether it's unravelling thread, or scratch marks, or bits just missing, he rarely has anything 'new'. If he does, it's an oddity.
-He also remains dirt poor.
-Has an improving but in places still limited knowledge of Japanese. This is mitigated somewhat by the international nature of Arcadium's body, but is still an issue he now resides in Japan. Curiously, 'language' seems to be a non-issue in the digital world.
-Though his digivice looks like a mechanical watch, the image is purely that - an image. The hands and numbers fade away if and when he seeks information on a digimon - it also can project images as well.
Digimon Partner: Coronamon: A precocious scamp with a great hunger for the novel and interesting, Coronamon is at once Justin's best friend, and his crutch. Where Justin is cautious, Coronamon will leap blindly; where Justin might be hesitant to talk, Coronamon will ask a million and one questions, some of an intrusive nature; when Justin might otherwise be content to stay at home and let the day pass by, Coronamon absolutely refuses to see it wasted. Well, most of the time. He has grown some decidedly cat-like behaviours in his time among the human world, so when not enjoying all that life has to offer, Coronamon can be an astonishingly lazy feline, curling up tight and refusing to budge for hours on end. Previously this had just sorta worked out to overlap with the time that Justin spent in school, but as circumstances shift around too, so too do Coronamon's habits. And they do not always come at the best of times.
